UCLA Readies for NCAA Indoor Championships
March 09, 2017 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA track and field team will send four student-athletes to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships in College Station, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M. The two-day meet will be held at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium from Friday, March 10 through Saturday, March 11.
On the men's side, the Bruins will be represented by freshman high jumper Michael Burke, senior long jumper Austin Hazel, and sophomore thrower Dotun Ogundeji. Senior thrower Torie Owers will represent the Bruin women in the shot put.
Burke punched his ticket to the indoor championships at the Columbia East-West Challenge in January with a UCLA indoor record jump of 7-3, a mark that places him 11th nationally heading into the meet.
Hazel comes into the NCAA Championships 12th nationally with his leap of 25-7.25 at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque. He previously competed in the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he placed 21st overall in the long jump.
Ogundeji has had a stellar season for UCLA thus far and is coming off a meet winning, and lifetime best, throw of 64-11.50 at the MPSF Championships that places him fifth in indoor school history. This mark is also fifth in the nation as he makes his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships.ย
Not to be outdone by Ogundeji, Owers took home the victory in the women's shot put competition at the MPSF Championships with an indoor personal best mark of 56-0.50. This throw was good for 13th in the country and will allow her to compete in her second NCAA Championship meet. She placed 14th at the meet in 2015.
The NCAA Indoor Championships mark the end of the indoor season for the Bruins, but they will be back in action for outdoor competition on Saturday, March 25 in Tempe, Arizona for the Pac-12 vs. Big 10 Challenge.
