UCLA Rowing Concludes Day One in San Diego

SAN DIEGO โ UCLA's second varsity eight raced to a first-place finish in its opening heat as the Bruins raced on Mission Bay in the annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday morning.

The second varsity eight's performance marked UCLA's only first-place finish of the morning in four races. All four Bruin boats advanced to Grand Final races, slated to take place on Sunday morning. The Bruins' 2V8+ registered a time of 6:45.164, less than three seconds ahead of second-place USC (6:47.806).

UCLA's varsity eight crew finished third in its Saturday morning heat, crossing the finish line with a time of 6:38.209 behind first-place Texas (6:23.062) and Wisconsin (6:27.671). The Bruins finished ahead of the University of Victoria (6:41.741) and UC Santa Barbara (6:58.060).

The Bruins' varsity four finished second in its preliminary heat, posting a time of 7:34.987. UCLA finished behind USC (7:20.704). Rounding out the final two boats in that V4+ heat included Sacramento State (7:55.131) and SMU (8:07.946).

UCLA's novice eight recorded a third-place finish, crossing the finish line in 7:23.269. Texas won the N8+ heat with a time of 7:01.298 while the University of British Columbia finished second (7:22.517), less than one second ahead of the Bruins. UCLA finished its novice eight heat ahead of San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara, Sacramento State and Loyola Marymount.

The Bruins will be back in action on Mission Bay on Sunday, April 2. UCLA's novice eight will race at 9:28 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 9:52 a.m. UCLA's varsity eight will take the water at 10:16 a.m., the novice eight will race at 11:56 a.m., while the second varsity four will conclude the Bruins' Crew Classic races at 12:04 p.m.
