April 15, 2017 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. โ Michael Toglia drove in four runs and hit a two-run home run, while Kyle Cuellar hit a RBI-double to tie the game in the ninth inning as the UCLA baseball team defeated No. 18 Stanford, 7-6, in 10 innings to claim a Pac-12 series win on Saturday from Sunken Diamond. With the series victory, the Bruins improve to 9-6 during Pac-12 play.
The Bruins scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning as Brett Stephens hit a one-out double down the first base line and came around to score after Toglia ripped a single through the right side of the infield for his fourth RBI of the game.
UCLA came into the ninth inning down by a run as pinch hitter Jack Stronach led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. After a Daniel Rosica sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second base, Kyle Cuellar brought home the game-tying run with a double to left-center field to knot the game at 6-6 and send the game to extra innings.
Brian Gadsby (3-4) earned the win tossing the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run and did not surrender a hit, while starter Jon Olsen tossed 5.0 shutout innings to begin the game with five strikeouts. Stanford's Colton Hock (5-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work.
UCLA built up a 2-0 lead as Zander Clarke blasted a solo home run over the wall in right-center field in the second inning and Toglia hit a RBI-single in the fourth inning. Toglia would make it 4-0 UCLA in the sixth inning as he blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to bring in Chase Strumpf.
The Cardinal battled back as they picked up a run in the sixth inning on a Jack Klein infield single, followed by two runs in the seventh inning on back-to-back RBI hits to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Bruins made it a 5-3 game in the eighth inning as Strumpf smashed a solo home run deep over the left-field fence to push it back to a two-run advantage.
Stanford grabbed its first lead of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning as Matt Winaker hit a three-run home run to right field for a 6-5 lead to set up the ninth-inning heroics for the Bruins.
UCLA finished with seven runs on 11 hits and one error, while the Cardinal ended the game with six runs on 11 hits and one error.
The Bruins return home next week to open a four-game homestand starting with No. 12 Long Beach State on Tuesday before hosting top-ranked Oregon State in a three-game weekend series at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
