SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Senior Delaney Spaulding was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Tuesday, while redshirt freshman Rachel Garcia picked up her fourth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor, as announced by the conference.
In her final Pac-12 series, Spaulding had eight hits in 12 at-bats (.667) during the Bruins' three-game sweep at Arizona State last weekend, scoring nine runs, driving in five and hitting a pair of home runs. Garcia was 5-for-11 (.455) at the plate with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored, while going 2-0 in the circle with a pair of complete games and 11 strikeouts in 12 innings.
Spaulding tied a school record last Friday against the Sun Devils with five hits and five runs scored, adding three RBI. She posted a three-run homer, three singles and a double to post the 10th, five-hit game in school history and the second, five-run contest. The senior added a solo homer in game one last Thursday and went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a walk and an RBI in Saturday's regular-season finale. Spaulding, who was named All-Pac-12 First Team on Monday, is tops on the squad with 14 home runs, 51 runs scored and 21 walks, tied for first with 15 doubles, second with a .381 average and third with 38 runs batted in and six stolen bases.
Garcia also had hits in all three games in Tempe, notching two on a solo homer and an RBI single in game one, a single in game two and two more hits in game three on an RBI single and a double. In the circle, she struck out eight over seven innings in last Thursday's victory, giving up just five hits and one walk. In the final game of the regular season, Garcia tallied three punchouts in five innings, allowing just three solo homers and a walk. Garcia, who was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, All-Pac-12 First Team and All-Pac-12 Freshman Team on Monday, leads the Bruins with an 18-7 record, a 1.95 earned run average and 161 strikeouts in 154 2/3 innings. At the plate, she is third with a .329 batting average and tied for second with 17 walks, adding five home runs, 25 runs batted in and 10 doubles.
Spaulding's Player of the Week award is her first of the season and third of her career. She won the honor once as a sophomore on March 9, 2015 and once last season on March 14, 2016. UCLA has won 79 Pac-10/12 Player of the Week awards.
Garcia picked up her seventh weekly honor of the season, having won Pac-12 Freshman of the Week four times (April 25, April 11 and March 28) and Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week three times (April 25, April 11, Feb. 21). The award is the sixth Freshman of the Week honor for UCLA in just the third year the accolade has been bestowed.
