UCLA Sweeps Utah on Senior Day

LOS ANGELES – Daniel Amaral went 4-for-4, while Michael Toglia, Chase Strumpf and Daniel Rosica each hit home runs as the UCLA baseball team earned a Pac-12 series sweep on Sunday with a 8-3 win over Utah at Jackie Robinson Stadium. It is the third series sweep for the Bruins during conference play this season.
With the game tied 1-1 in the fifth inning, UCLA put up five runs for a 6-1 advantage. Brett Stephens drove in the first run of the frame with a RBI-double to right field after a 13-pitch at-bat, followed by Toglia and Strumpf hitting back-to-back home runs to left field.
The Bruins pushed the lead to 7-1 in the sixth inning when Rosica hit a solo home run down the left-field line.
The Utes scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but UCLA would get one back in the bottom of the eighth inning as Ryan Kreidler scored from second base on a RBI-single off the bat of Rosica.
UCLA grabbed an early 1-0 advantage as Stephens drew a lead-off walk and came around to score when Sean Bouchard grounded out to the shortstop. Utah responded with a run in the third inning to tie the game on a Hunter Simmons RBI-single to center field.
Jon Olsen (6-1) improves to 5-0 in conference play after tossing 5.2 innings allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Utah starter Josh Lapiana (3-6) suffered the loss allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
UCLA (28-23, 17-10) ended the game with eight runs on 13 hits, while Utah (24-24, 12-15) finished with three runs on nine hits and no errors.
Prior to the game, the Bruins celebrated Senior Day as Scott Burke, Moises Ceja, Nick Kern and Brett Stephens were honored before their final home game.
The Bruins return to the field on Tuesday for its final midweek game of the season when they travel to UC Irvine with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. (PT).
