Quarterfinal Spot Secured by Redlicki-Zhu
May 26, 2017 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – The UCLA pair of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship Friday with a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Texas Tech tandem of Connor Curry and Bjorn Thomson. The Bruin team will look to continue its run Saturday when it takes on the Oklahoma duo of Andrew Harris and Spencer Papa as one of the final eight teams remaining.
The Red Raiders jumped out to an early lead against Redlicki-Zhu, but the advantage was short-lived. The Bruins stormed back and quickly set the tone for the rest of the match. The 6-3, 6-3 final matched the score from the pair's first-round win over Auburn's Maxime Hinnisdaels and Conner Huertas Thursday. The result improved Redlicki-Zhu's overall record to 21-4 and dropped Curry-Thomson's final tally to 15-7.
Saturday's opponent will represent another test for the Bruin tandem, as Harris-Papa will look to upend its second higher-seeded team and second Redlicki brother in as many days. The Sooners topped the sixth-ranked Arkansas team of Mike Redlicki and Jose Salazar in their Friday quarterfinal, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).
