No. 10 Men's Tennis Rolls in Kickoff Weekend Opener
January 23, 2026 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The 10th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 victory in its ITA Kickoff Weekend opener Friday against New Mexico, advancing to Saturday's championship match. Los Angeles Tennis Center is hosting both days of matches, which also feature Pacific and UC Santa Barbara.
Cassius Chinlund earned his second clinching win in as many early-season matches, posting the day's third straight-set singles triumph for the Bruins (2-0). Spencer Johnson and Bengt Reinhard also prevailed after UCLA claimed the doubles point.
UCLA faces UCSB Saturday at 1 p.m. PT for a trip to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championship event. New Mexico meets Pacific in the consolation match at 10 a.m. UCSB beat Pacific 4-0 in Friday's first contest.
Doubles play mirrored the Bruins' opener, with No. 47 Rudy Quan/Aadarsh Tripathi clinching the point on Court 2 after No. 19 Johnson/Emon van Loben Sels led off with a win up top. Johnson/van Loben Sels defeated Carl Labitzke/Jan Skerbatis and Quan/Tripathi knocked off Alberto Perez/Jakub Prachar with matching 6-3 results.
Making his dual debut, Reinhard took control early in singles play and never looked back en route to a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Labitzke on Court 6. That sparked a run on victories for the Bruins, with No. 75 Spencer Johnson next to finish on Court 2. The 6-3, 6-1 win versus Prachar kept Johnson's dual record spotless at 2-0 in singles, as well as in doubles.
Moving up a court following his dual debut, Chinlund ended the match moments later. His 6-3, 6-2 victory opposite Tyler Waddock on Court 5 came six days after the redshirt freshman from Los Angeles recorded the fourth point in a home shutout of UC Irvine.
