WEST LINN, Ore. - Playing in his hometown, UCLA junior-to-be Cole Madey dominated at the Oregon Golf Club last week (June 20-25), winning the 108th Oregon Amateur Championship.
Madey blistered the OGC during two rounds of stroke play on June 20 and 21, shooting a 7-under 64 and a 5-under 66 to win medalist honors by nine strokes (-12, 130). He then won his six match-play rounds by a combined margin of 27 and 19.
He never trailed in five of his six matches, defeating Jeremy Wu (6 and 5) in the Round of 64 on June 22, Jim Dunlap (5 and 3) in the Round of 32 and Robert Harrington (5 and 4) in the Round of 16 on June 23, William Snow (3 and 1) in the Quarterfinals and Blake Seabaugh (3 and 2) in the Semifinals on June 24 and Brian Humphreys (5 and 4) in the 36-hole Championship match on June 25. Madey's Semifinal match marked the only time he trailed during match play, as he came back from a 1-down deficit after seven holes to win four of the next five and eventually go on to victory.
Madey, an All-Pac-12 Conference Honorable Mention selection as a sophomore, was second on the Bruins in scoring average at 72.6, recording three Top 10s and six Top 20 showings. He tied for the lowest UCLA finish at the Pac-12 Championships, tying for ninth.
