OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Six past, present and future Bruins finished up play at the World Cup of Softball XII on Sunday, as the USA Softball Women's National Team placed in second, while the USA Softball Junior Women's National Team posted a fifth-place showing.
Putting on the Red, White and Blue for the Women's National Team were alum Ally Carda, 2017 senior Delaney Spaulding and junior-to-be Paige Halstead. Carda was outstanding in the circle, winning each of her outings and giving up no runs in 8 1/3 innings. She struck out a team-best 14 and allowed just six hits and two walks. Against Canada on July 6, Carda fanned eight in 4 1/3 innings of two-hit ball. She came back two days later versus Australia and struck out six in four frames. Carda also had four plate appearances, scoring a run against Mexico on July 5 after getting hit by a pitch.
Spaulding hit .474 (9-for-19) with a home run, eight runs batted in and seven runs scored. She had hits in five of her seven games, including a 4-for-5, four-RBI, four-run performance on July 8 against Australia. Spaulding homered against the Aussies and was a triple shy of the cycle thanks to a pair of singles and a double. She added two hits against Canada (July 6) and two RBI versus Japan (July 7).
Halstead played in three games, going 1-for-4 (.250) with an RBI. Her lone hit came versus the JWNT on July 7 on an RBI double, as she picked up the start behind the plate.
The WNT will play in a few exhibition games in July before heading to the Dominican Republic (Aug. 4-13) for the Pan Am/World Qualifier. The 2017 season concludes in Japan (Aug. 25-27) with the Japan Cup.
Representing the Junior Women's National Team were sophomore-to-be Bubba Nickles and incoming freshman Holly Azevedo. Nickles led the JWNT with a team-best .550 average (11-for-20), two home runs, 10 runs batted in and four doubles, adding four runs. She had hits in all six of her games, including a 4-for-4, two RBI effort against Canada on July 5. Nickles added two-hit contests versus the WNT on July 7 and against Puerto Rico in the fifth-place game on July 9, driving in four in that latter tilt. She also homered in that game, as well as against Team Philippines on July 7.
Azevedo pitched in four games for the JWNT, starting twice and posting a 3.65 earned run average in 15 1/3 innings. She struck out 10, including four in a complete-game, three-hit shutout of Puerto Rico on July 9. Azevedo tossed 6 2/3 innings against Australia on July 6, fanning three.
Up next for the JWNT is the WBSC World Championship later this month (July 24-30) in Clearwater, Fla.
In addition to the five Bruins on the USA squads, 2017 senior Gabrielle Maurice played for Team Philippines, which finished seventh. Maurice was 6-for-19 (.316) with one run scored and one RBI. She had hits in five of her seven contests, including a two-hit performance on July 5 versus Australia.
