UCLA Defeats UCSB, 3-1, to Remain Undefeated

August 27, 2017 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES - No. 7 UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes and cruised to a 3-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara. With the win, the Bruins improved to 4-0 on the year while handing the Gauchos their first loss of the season.

"This was a good quality team that's well-organized," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell about the Gauchos. "They haven't given up a goal on the year, so to come out and score two goals in the first half and only give up one shot was great. I thought we were unlucky not to get one or two more goals in the game, but it's nice to see how we're scoring goals in different ways."

Senior defender MacKenzie Cerda scored the first goal at 10:58 on a one-time volley in the box. Zoey Goralski started the play by sending an outstanding cross into the box with a defender draped all over her. Cerda leaped to volley the cross into the back of the net for her second goal of the year. The goal was the first given up by the Gauchos in 2017.

Freshman midfielder Delanie Sheehan doubled UCLA's lead at 18:17, taking a throw-in by Gabrielle Matulich and nutmegging a defender to get free before unleashing a long-distance left-footed bomb far post past the UCSB goalkeeper. Sheehan's goal was her third of the season.

UCLA took a 2-0 lead into halftime but quickly made it 3-0 on a header by Julia Hernandez. Ashley Sanchez set up the play, taking a pass from Olivia Athens and lobbing a cross to the far post right to Hernandez, who headed it in for her fourth goal of the season.

UCSB foiled the Bruins' hopes for a shutout in the 55th minute when Maddie Gibson scored on a header off a cross on UCSB's only shot of the half. UCLA's defense allowed just two shots total in the game, while the offense had 17 shots and forced UCSB goalkeeper Brittney Rogers into five saves.

The Bruins will be on the road for the next three games, beginning with a Friday, Sept. 1 contest at BYU. The game will be televised live on BYUTV at 6pm PT.
