UCLA, Pepperdine Tie, 1-1

September 15, 2017 | Women's Soccer

LOS ANGELES - Top-ranked UCLA and Pepperdine played to a 1-1 tie as the Bruins finished non-conference play with a 7-0-1 record.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half, with UCLA dominating the stat sheet, outshooting the Waves, 7-0. The Bruins had what looked to be a goal by Viviana Villacorta called off in the 44th minute, as Villacorta was ruled to be offside.

When the match resumed play in the second half, however, the Bruins wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just 37 seconds in, Villacorta connected with Hailie Mace, who one-timed the ball past Pepperdine goalkeeper Brielle Preece for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Pepperdine (4-2-2) had some chances to equalize midway through the second half, as Brooke Zenner skimmed the crossbar in the 65th minute, and Bri Visalli just missed wide in the 66th minute. The Waves finally broke through in the 78th minute off a set piece. Visalli's header was blocked by a UCLA defender, and the rebound came out to Jamie Van Horn, who found a hole between the Bruin defense and scored to tie the match up at 1-1. The goal was the first scored by the Waves against UCLA since 2011.

In overtime, UCLA and Pepperdine continued to trade scoring opportunities. Mace had the first opportunity in the 92nd minute but was saved by Preece. A few seconds later, Joelle Anderson had a good look at a header but went just high. A diving header attempt by Jessie Fleming was saved in the 96th minute, and Preece made another save on an Ashley Sanchez shot in the 100th minute. UCLA had some good chances in the second overtime period as well but missed high in the 105th and 106th minutes.

Preece finished with a career-high nine saves on 20 UCLA shots, while Bruin goalkeeper Teagan Micah recorded one save on nine Pepperdine shots.

UCLA will begin Pac-12 play on Friday, Sept. 22 at Colorado. The match will be televised live on Pac-12 Network at 2:30 pm PT.
