No. 1 UCLA Opens Pac-12 Play with 2-0 Win

BOULDER, Colo. โ Ashley Sanchez scored the game-winning goal and picked up an assist, while Sunny Dunphy recorded her first goal of the season as the top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team opened Pac-12 play with a 2-0 victory at Colorado on Friday from Prentup Field. The Bruins improve to 8-0-1 on the season.
UCLA outshot Colorado (6-2-2, 0-1-0) 18-3 and held a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Bruins picked up their third road shutout of the season as Teagan Micah made one save.
After a scoreless first half, UCLA would go ahead 1-0 in the 59th minute. Anika Rodriguez would push the ball up the left-side of the field with a great individual effort and eventually found Sanchez on a cross to the front of the box who finished far post for her second goal of the season.

The Bruins continued to put pressure on the Colorado defense throughout the second half as they registered 14ย shots in the period. UCLA capitalized on that pressure in the 85th minute as Dunphy one-timed a cross by Sanchez from 12 yards away into the back of the net for the two-goal advantage. It marks Dunphy's second career goal.

Colorado's Jalen Tompkins made seven saves in the match including stopping a penalty kick by Rodriguez in the 50th minute to keep the match scoreless.
The Bruins host the Oregon schools next week for a pair of doubleheaders with the UCLA men's soccer team. The Bruin women play Oregon on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 5 p.m. followed by the men's game against California at 8 p.m.
