Bruins Down Ducks, 2-0
September 28, 2017 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES โ The top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team improved to 9-0-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Pac-12 play after a 2-0 victory over Oregon (6-4-0, 0-2-0) at Drake Stadium. Anika Rodriguez scored the game-winning goal and assisted on another, and goalkeeper Teagan Micah recorded her second consecutive shutout.
Rodriguez put UCLA on the board in the 16th minute with a free kick goal, her second goal of the season. The Bruins were awarded the free kick the box after an Oregon handball was called just outside the box.
Just over five minutes later, Hailie Mace doubled the Bruins' lead, tapping in a Rodriguez pass at close range. Ashley Sanchez also earned an assist on the play, dribbling past several Duck defenders up the field and crossing to Rodriguez, who found Mace for the goal. Mace's goal was her team-leading seventh of the season.
Armed with a 2-0 halftime lead, the Bruin defense went to work in the second half, withholding an Oregon attack that totaled seven shots in the half. Micah was tested early in the half, making a huge save in the 49th minute on a shot by Marissa Everett. The rebound went to Miranda Schulz, but her follow-up shot went wide. Everett also had another big opportunity in the 83rd minute, getting ahead on a breakaway, but Kaiya McCullough hustled back to pressure Everett's shot, allowing Micah to make the save.
UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell noted the play of the Bruins off the bench, including defender Gabrielle Matulich, forward Sunny Dunphy, who recorded three shots, and midfielder Delanie Sheehan, who had one shot on goal that required a point blank save by Halla Hinriksdottir.
The Bruins outshot the Ducks, 13-11 and had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Micah finished with three saves and the clean sheet, and Hinriksdottir made six saves.
UCLA will host Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1pm in the first game of a doubleheader with the UCLA men, who host Stanford at 5pm. Both games will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
