
UCLA Opens Fall Campaign at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The 2017-18 UCLA women's tennis team will open its fall schedule Friday when seven Bruins begin play at the Cal Fall Invitational. The three-day event features singles and doubles tournaments from the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley. A live stream of the matches from Hellman will be available at CalBears.com.
Five UCLA players will take part in the ITA Blue Singles draw at Hellman, including No. 4 seed Fleming, who will begin play Friday at 9:30 a.m. against Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's. Also scheduled to start at 9:30 is Alaina Miller, who will take on Marta Ruedas of Nevada. Gabby Andrews will square off with Maddie Pothoff of Santa Clara at 11:15 a.m., while No. 3 seed Jada Hart will take on Kristi Jorgensen of UC Davis at 12:30 p.m. The fifth and final Bruin playing in the ITA Blue Singles draw is freshman Abi Altick, who will make her UCLA debut as the No. 6 seed against Zeina El Tawil of Santa Clara.
Bruin Kristin Wiley, the No. 2 seed in the ITA Gold Singles draw, will face off with Isabella von Ebbe of UC Davis in the first round on the Channing courts. To round out the Bruin singles participation, Sophie Bendetti, a freshman from Pacific Palisades, Calif., will don blue and gold for the first time against Shirley Hall of UC Davis in the ITA White Singles draw.
The ITA Blue Doubles draw will feature two Bruin doubles pairings, including the reigning Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year of Fleming and Hart. That duo, seeded No. 3, will take on Ana Loaiza Esquivias and Jenna Dorian of Sacramento State. Those teams will get things started Friday at 8:00 a.m. at Hellman. The No. 4 seed team of Miller and Andrews will face off against Anneroos Nederstigt and Maayan Sela at the same time. The freshman duo of Altick and Bendetti will take part in the ITA Gold Doubles draw against Kareena Manji and Vanessa Nommenson of Saint Mary's, also at 8:00 a.m.
