Bruin XC Set for Final Tune-Up Before Pac-12 Championships
October 11, 2018 | Cross Country
Just two meets on Saturday separate the UCLA cross country team and the Pac-12 Championships, as the Bruins return to the course this weekend at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals and Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
UCLA's day will open in the Badger State, with the women's "Cardinal" 6K race coming at 8 a.m. (PT). The Bruin men will follow in the "White" 8K race at 10:15 a.m.
In Santa Clara, the men's 8K race will begin at 8:45 a.m. (PT), followed by the women's 6K at 9:30 a.m.
WISCONSIN PRE-NATIONALS
Meet Information
The Pre-Nationals serves as a pre-cursor for the national championships and consists of two evenly-seeded races per gender, the "Cardinal" and "White" races.
The UCLA men, currently ranked 25th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll (Oct. 2), will be one of 19 squads ranked within the top 30. The pool features three other Pac-12 teams in Arizona, No. 12 Washington and No. 17 Washington State.
On the women's side, the (RV) Bruins will square off against multiple ranked foes, including top-ranked Colorado. Additional Pac-12 teams in the Cardinal race are Arizona, (RV) California and No. 4 Oregon.
Bruin assistant coach Devin Elizondo said the program is excited for the opportunity to race against a "national class field" with teams from every region.
"This will be the first litmus test for both our veterans and our new incoming student-athletes," said Elizondo. "We are at the halfway point of the season with only the championship phase to follow. It will be a valuable training ground in which to sharpen up prior to the championship phase of training and racing."
BRONCO INVITATIONAL
Meet Information
The Bronco Invitational will take place on the relatively flat course of Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif.
While the men are the only top-25 team competing, the meet features seven regionally-ranked teams, including California (No. 12 – West). On the women's side, the Bruins are one of three teams recognized in the most recent poll, with the other two being (RV) California and (RV) Oregon State.
LAST TIME OUT
The UCLA cross country program's last showing came on Sept. 29 at The Master's University XC Invite and Stanford Invite.
In the men's 8K race at Stanford, junior Garrett Reynolds led the way with a fourth-place time of 23:58.7, a collegiate best, while sophomore Erika Adler paced the women in the 6K, clocking a time of 21:13.6 for a ninth-place finish.
The Master's XC Invite saw the UCLA women snag first place for the second-consecutive season. The Bruins had six top-20 finishes, led by freshman Gwyneth George (second, 18:13.3).
