The Bruins were led by sophomore Luke Henriksson, who scored a career-high and game-high-tying four goals. Redshirt junior Alex Wolf started in the cage and went the distance, recording a season-high 14 saves while allowing 11 goals.
Jordan Hoover opened the scoring in the game with a goal from the front court (5:58) for the Golden Bears. Sophomore Nicolas Saveljic tied it up at 1-1 with a goal from the front court (4:58). Wolf denied Johnny Hooper on a penalty shot at (2:36) to keep the score tied at 1-1 and then Saveljic netted his second of the game on a 6-on-4 opportunity (2:04) to give UCLA its first lead of the game at 2-1, a score that would hold until the end of the period.
Johnny Hooper opened the scoring in the second for Cal (5:23) to tie it at 2-2. But Freshman Jake Cavano scored on a skip shot, his 12th consecutive game with a goal (5:11) to put UCLA back in front, 3-2. Former Bruin Spencer Farrar added a power play goal (4:53) that tied it at 3-3. But the Bruins reeled off three unanswered goals. Redshirt Freshman Bailey Jarvis scored his first goal in over a month (4:22) to make it 4-3. Then Henriksson (1:39, penalty) and senior David Stiling (1:07) found the back of the net to extend the lead to 6-3 at the break.
Hoover opened the scoring in the third (6:31) with his second goal of the game at two meters and then scored on a counter (5:29) to cut the lead to 6-5. Then Safak Simsek tied the game at 6-6 with a goal from the front court (4:37). California regained the lead with a power play goal by Hooper, his second of the game (3:04). Henriksson ended the Bruins' scoring drought of over six minutes with a sweet lob shot (2:38) to tie the game at 7-7. Sophomore Evan Rosenfeld netted his first goal of the game (0:42) as UCLA regained the lead, 8-7. Henriksson completed a hat trick with a penalty shot conversion (0:01) to give the Bruins a 9-7 lead heading into the fourth.
Henriksson scored his fourth of the game to open the scoring in the fourth period with a power play goal (6:38) to put the Bruins up 10-7. But Hoover answered with his fourth of the game (6:10) on a 6-on-5 opportunity for Cal to cut the deficit to 10-8. Senior Austin Rone stepped up and found the back of the net with a skipper (5:43) to push the lead to 11-8. Nikos Delagrammatikas scored his first for the Golden Bears (4:10) to cut the lead to 11-9. Rone would later beat the shot clock (2:43) for his second of the game to push the lead to 12-9. Delagrammatikas added his second of the game on a power play (2:19) to trim the lead to 12-10. Simsek then added his second of the game (1:28) with a cross-cage shot from the front court to cut the lead to 12-11. The Golden Bears drew an exclusion in the final seconds, but Wolf stopped a shot by Simsek to seal the 12-11 win.
The Bruins will have next week off and will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 27 when they face No. 4 California in the Bruins' MPSF opener in Berkeley, Calif., live on the Pac-12 Networks. Game time has yet to be announced.
