Hands Selected to Bob Cousy Award Watch List
October 15, 2018 | Men's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UCLA sophomore Jaylen Hands has been chosen as one of 20 players selected to the watch list for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, as announced Monday.
Hands, a 6-foot-3 guard from San Diego, averaged 9.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a freshman last season. He played in 31 of the team's 33 games and made 15 starts. Hands ranked fourth on the team in scoring and was second in both total assists (81) and steals (30).
Named after former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor recognizes the nation's top point guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the initial 20-player watch list.
As a freshman in 2017-18, Hands shot 37.4 percent from three-point range (43-for-115) and connected on 40.5 percent of his shots from the field. He finished with a season-high 23 points in the team's home victory against Detroit Mercy (Dec. 3, 2017) and dished a season-high 10 assists in a victory over Stanford (Jan. 27, 2018).
By mid-February of 2019, the award's watch list of 20 players will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to the award's selection committee. The winner of the Bob Cousy Award will be presented to the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show in Los Angeles on Friday, April 12.
