Bruins Edged 4-3 by Oregon State in Back-and-Forth OT Affair
October 28, 2018 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 23 UCLA men's soccer team found itself on the wrong end of a wild, back-and-forth affair on Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field, as Oregon State scored a 93rd minute golden goal to claim a 4-3 win.
Neither the Bruins (9-6, 4-3 Pac-12) or Beavers (10-4-3, 6-2-1) held a multi-goal lead at any point, as the home team equalized to make it 1-1 and 2-2 while UCLA scored late to make it 3-3 and send the contest to overtime.
In the extra period, OSU received a game-winner from Don Tchilao, who got behind the Bruin back line for a breakaway goal at the 92:58 mark.
The Bruins held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 earlier in the contest.
Senior midfielder Anderson Asiedu opened the contest's scoring in the 34th minute with his first goal of the campaign. The play started with a nice break-up from Erik Holt, who intercepted a clearance attempt from OSU and sent it back into the offensive third to keep UCLA's attack alive. Moments later, Asiedu played a ball to Frankie Amaya then went streaking towards the box. Amaya sent a short pass to Milan Iloski, who turned towards goal and then sent a through ball into the box for Asiedu, who took a touch before sending a right-footed shot past OSU keeper Adrian Fernandez.
Oregon State's Gloire Amanda headed in a cross from Tchilao just before the halftime whistle, making it a 1-1 game heading into the break.
UCLA re-established its lead in the 64th minute, as Iloski curled a 20-yard free kick into the top-right corner of the net, freezing Fernandez for his third goal of the season (two of which have come on free kicks).
That lead, the Bruins' last, would be short-lived as Sofianne Djeffal equalized four minutes later with a volley from the top of the box. OSU took its first lead of the game in the 82nd, as Hassani Dotson stuffed home a rebound off a corner kick to make it 3-2 in favor of the home side.
UCLA rallied to tie the game in the 85th minute with another set piece goal. Freshman midfielder Matt Hundley sent in a corner to the near post, where sophomore midfielder Eric Iloski flicked it to the middle of the six and onto the foot of sophomore defender Brandon Terwege, who slipped it into the net for the equalizer.
OSU narrowly outshot UCLA 17-14 for the game. Freshman keeper Justin Garces made a pair of saves for the Bruins.
UCLA finishes the 2018 regular season with three straight home games, starting next week by hosting California on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. and Stanford on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Both contests will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
