Bruins Complete Busy Week at Riviera

LOS ANGELES -- Six members of the UCLA women's tennis team recently took part in one of the fall's largest tournaments, as the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships invited the nation's top players for Year 34 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
While freshman Elysia Bolton had previously debuted at the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters tournament in late September, All-Americans represented the first fall action for seniors Gabby Andrews, Ayan Broomfield and Alaina Miller, redshirt junior Jada Hart and sophomore Abi Altick.
The doubles team of Bolton and Hart shined brightest, running off three consecutive wins in the qualifying round to reach the main draw. The highlight win for the 29th-ranked pair was an 8-1 trouncing of No. 55 Emmanuelle Salas and Carla Touly of Florida State to reach the 32-team field. Once there, Bolton-Hart defeated Meible Chi-Kaitlyn McCarthy of Duke, 8-4, before falling to No. 8 Ilze Hattingh-Lauryn John-Baptiste of Arizona State in a thriller, 8-7 (5).
Hart also took part in the singles main draw, where she met the Oracle ITA preseason No. 2 player, Makenna Jones of North Carolina. Jones immediately acted to bury No. 15 with a 6-0 first set, but the Bruin clawed back to send the match to a third set. Jones ultimately proved too much, securing a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Singles pre-qualifying action saw Bolton score her first win versus a ranked opponent, 6-3, 7-5 over No. 100 Alisa Soloveva of Winthrop, before bowing out against Wisconsin's Lexi Keberle in three sets. No. 86 Miller also went three sets in pre-qualifying, dropping a decision to No. 117 Emilee Duong of Illinois.
No. 52 Altick made an impressive All-Americans debut versus her preseason rankings neighbor, knocking off No. 53 Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss in qualifying action, 6-4, 7-6 (9). Her run came to a close in the next match, however, as she dropped a straight-set result to No. 37 Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech.
Bolton-Hart was not the only UCLA doubles team to have success at All-Americans, as each of the other Bruin duos notched a pre-qualifying win. The 47th-ranked tandem of Ayan Broomfield and Miller claimed its opening-round win by default, while No. 44 Altick-Gabby Andrews illustrated why it received a first-round bye in defeating Andrea Kevakian-Christie Wan of Columbia, 8-1. Each pair would fall one round after its win in 8-6 and 8-5 decisions, respectively.
