Andrews-Broomfield Victorious at Kramer
November 05, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES -- The UCLA women's tennis pair of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield claimed its second doubles title in as many weeks, as the seniors proved too much for the rest of the Jack Kramer Collegiate Tournament field. The tandem bested the Baylor combination of Livia Kraus and Kristina Sorokolet and can now turn its attention to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which begin Nov. 7.
Broomfield also had an impressive run as part of the event's singles draw, finishing as the runner-up. Andrews, meanwhile, made the Round of 16.
The second-seeded Bruin seniors faced another veteran duo in the opening round, as Andrews-Broomfield topped Sophia Chow-Katie Kukaras of San Diego, 8-2. The UCLA pair was dominant in the round of eight, defeating the Pepperdine-UC Santa Barbara tandem of Adrijana Lekaj and Lise Sentenac by an 8-1 score. A pair of Waves stood in the Bruins' way of a final-round berth, but Andrews-Broomfield again prevailed, 8-3 over third-seeded Anastasia Iamachkine and Dzina Milovanovic.
In the final, the Baylor duo of Kraus and Sorokelet was no match for Andrews-Broomfield, which notched an 8-1 win for another doubles title. The Bruin pair previously defeated Pepperdine's 26th-ranked team of Ashley Lahey-Evgeniya Levashova in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships doubles final in San Diego (Oct. 18-22).
Andrews and Broomfield also got chances to showcase their skills on the singles courts, where both players were triumphant in the opening round. Andrews did not allow Sentenac to extend their match into a third set, picking up a 6-4, 7-6 win to move into the final 16. Broomfield joined her there, but not before fighting back against USD's Daniela Morales for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. While Andrews was stopped by the fifth-seeded Iamachkine, Broomfield controlled her showdown to the tune of a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caisey Lee Emery of Cal State Fullerton.
The quarterfinal round saw a rivalry match between Broomfield and Alexa Corcoleotes, but the Bruin showed no added pressure in a 6-2, 6-4 win. The semis pitted Broomfield against the seventh-seeded Milovanovic, who answered a first-set win by the Bruin to force a deciding third. Broomfield once again pulled it, though, controlling the third set and taking the match, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0. Her run would end in the final, however, as the top-seeded Kraus avenged the earlier doubles loss with a 6-1, 6-0 performance.
