LOS ANGELES – The No. 23 UCLA women's basketball team will look to protect its 40-game winning streak against unranked opponents alive on Sunday when the Bruins host the Rice Owls. Tip-off at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom is set for 2:05 p.m. (PT).

Rice has strung together back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, posting a 22-13 mark in 2016-17 and 23-10 record a year ago. The Owls won the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) in 2017, defeating UNC-Greensboro by a final score of 74-62. Last season, Rice made the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), but fell in the second round to New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., by a final count of 93-73. The Owls return three starters from last season, including Ogwumike, the top-returning scorer and rebounder, who posted 17.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in 2017-18.

UCLA and Rice have only met twice, with the Bruins winning both games. The two teams last met on Dec.17, 2008, when the Bruins collected an 82-64 triumph on the road. UCLA started the game on fire, scoring the first 20 points and holding the Owls scoreless until the 12:14 mark. During that stretch, the Bruins went 10-for-13 and forced 10 turnovers. The Bruins had 27 points before the Owls even made their first field goal after 12 misses, at the 9:20 mark. Doreena Campbell led the Bruins with 16 points, while Nina Earl (12), Christina Nzekwe (10), Darxia Morris (10) and Chinyere Ibekwe (10) also scored in double figures. With that win, UCLA improved to 8-1, notching its best start, at the time, in 28 years. The only other meeting came on Nov. 18, 2007, when the Bruins posted a 79-71 win at Pauley Pavilion.
