LAST TIME AGAINST OREGON STATE
Aaron Holiday scored a team-high 22 points, making 11 of 12 free throws, in the Bruins' 69-63 loss at Oregon State last month. UCLA rallied from a 48-40 deficit, tied the game at 48-48, and then led, 60-59, with 3:24 to play. From that point, Oregon State took advantage of a 10-3 scoring run to secure the six-point victory.
ย
BACK FROM THE ROAD
Aaron Holiday averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 assists in two road games last week. Holiday finished with a team-high 17 points in UCLA's 82-74 win at No. 13 Arizona on Thursday. He scored 20 points (including 17 after halftime) in the Bruins' 88-79 loss at Arizona State on Saturday evening. Five Bruins scored in double figures in the win at Arizona, as UCLA won for the third time in its last five meetings at Arizona's McKale Center (previous wins took place in Jan. 2013 and Feb. 2017). UCLA lost at Arizona State for the first time since Feb. 18, 2015 (the Bruins had won their previous two games at ASU).
ย
GOLOMAN'S CAREER NIGHT
Senior forward G.G. Goloman (7.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg) had a career night in UCLA's 82-74 victory at Arizona last Thursday. He set career highs in points (16), three-pointers made (3) and minutes played (36). Goloman nailed critical three-pointers with 6:10 to play and 1:42 to play, helping the Bruins maintain a double-digit lead.
ย
FREE THROWS
UCLA shot 85.7% (18-for-21) from the free throw line in two road contests last week (at Arizona and at Arizona State). Overall, the Bruins have shot 72.4% at the charity stripe this season. Last season, UCLA shot 73.8% from the free throw line. Aaron Holiday ranks third in the Pac-12 in free throw makes (124) and attempts (149).
ย
HOLIDAY'S HEROICS
Aaron Holiday ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in scoring (19.1 ppg), through Sunday, Feb. 11. He has totaled at least 20 points in 13 games. He entered his junior season having scored at least 20 points in just three previous games (all as a sophomore in 2016-17). Holiday currently ranks No. 37 on UCLA's all-time scoring list with 1,250 points (he is 122 points shy of becoming the No. 30 all-time scorer in school history). He ranks No. 8 this season in the Pac-12 (all games) in three-point field goal percentage (42.1%, 56-of-133) and is No. 10 in free throw percentage (83.2%, 124-of-149).
ย
Through games played Sunday, Feb. 11, Holiday was one of six players in NCAA Division I men's basketball to have averaged at least 19.0 points and 5.0 assists per game. Others in that group included Trae Young (Oklahoma), RJ Cole (Howard), Junior Robinson (Mount St. Mary's), Jon Elmore (Marshall) and Jermaine Marrow (Hampton).
ย
Holiday (33 points and 11 rebounds against Washington State on Dec. 29) became UCLA's first player to record at least 33 points and 11 rebounds in a game since Feb. 26, 1995. Ed O'Bannon had team highs of 37 points and 13 rebounds in UCLA's 100-77 win over Duke in Pauley Pavilion, connecting on 14 of 22 shots.
ย
Holiday has become just the third UCLA player in the last 20 seasons (1998-99 through 2017-18) to have scored at least 30 points in two or more games in a single season. Jordan Adams had a pair of 30+ point games as a sophomore in 2013-14. Bryce Alford had two games with at least 30 points as a senior in 2016-17.
ย
Holiday's game-winning layup with 0.9 seconds to play helped UCLA edge Wisconsin, 72-70, in Kansas City, Mo., on Nov. 21. UCLA trailed the Badgers, 65-59, with 3:30 to play before Holiday scored the Bruins' final 10 points. He scored six of UCLA's final 10 points in the Bruins' 83-75 win over Kentucky in New Orleans (Dec. 23).
ย
NEWS AND NOTES
UCLA has just five games remaining on its regular-season schedule โ€“ two home games (vs. Oregon State and Oregon) this week before closing the regular season with three consecutive road contests (at Utah, Colorado and USC).
ย
Junior Aaron Holiday ranks in the top 10 in the Pac-12 in three-point field goal percentage and has taken the fourth-highest number of three-point attempts (133). Holiday attempted a career-high 10 three-pointers last Saturday at Arizona State.
ย
Senior Thomas Welsh has made 30 of 80 three-point attempts as a senior. Prior to this season, he had attempted just one three-pointer (and he made that shot) in a win over Washington State at home on March 4, 2017.
ย
Freshman Jaylen Hands helped give UCLA a 44-34 halftime lead in the win at Arizona last Thursday by hitting three three-pointers with under one minute to go in the first half. Hands finished with 11 points in that game (all in the first half).
ย
Freshman Kris Wilkes has improved as a free throw shooter. He has made 76.9% (40-of-52) of his free throws over the past 14 games. He opened the season, through 11 games, having shot 53.3% (24-of-45) from the free throw line.
ย
DOUBLE-DOUBLES
Thomas Welsh (13.0 ppg, 10.3 rpg) has totaled 14 double-doubles this season. He recorded 10 double-doubles as a sophomore in 2015-16. Welsh is the eighth UCLA player in the past 20 years to have logged at least 10 double-doubles in one season. Since the start of the Bruins' 1998-99 campaign, Kevin Love has registered more double-doubles in a single season than any other UCLA player (23 double-doubles in 2007-08). The school's single-season double-doubles record is 28 by Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) during the Bruins' 1967-68 NCAA title-winning season.
ย
ABOUT THE BRUINS
Aaron Holiday ranks first among all Pac-12 players (in conference games only) in scoring, having averaged 20.5 points in the Bruins' 13 league games (through games played Feb. 11). In addition, Holiday has made 35 of 67 three-point attempts in Pac-12 Conference action, converting at a 52.2% clip (the No. 1 three-point percentage among Pac-12 players).
ย
The Bruins have shot 50.0% or better in nine games (going 8-1 in those contests). UCLA shot a season-best 58.2% in the team's 107-84 win at California (Jan. 6). Most recently, the Bruins shot 51.6% (32-for-62) in a road win last Thursday night at No. 13 Arizona. UCLA leads the Pac-12 (conference games only) in three-point percentage (39.7%, 125-of-315).
ย
Aaron Holiday and Thomas Welsh both reached the heralded 1,000-career-point milestone in a Pac-12 victory against Washington State earlier this season (Dec. 29, 2017). In a 33-point, 11-rebound performance, Holiday crossed the 1,000 point marker in the first half of the game. Welsh reached the milestone in the second half of UCLA's victory that night.
ย
Senior center Thomas Welsh and Arizona's Deandre Ayton are the only players in the Pac-12 to have averaged at least 10 points and 10 rebounds per game (Welsh currently stands at 13.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg). Welsh (11 pts, 12 rebs) and Ayton (16 pts, 12 rebs) each had double-doubles when UCLA won at No. 13 Arizona, 82-74, on Thursday, Feb. 8.
