MVB Blanks Trojans To Win 7th Straight

The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team rolled to its seventh straight win, in three sets, over No. 15 USC in an Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Wednesday night in Pauley Pavilion. Score of the contest were 25-15, 25-18, 25-19. The Bruins, who hit over .400 for the sixth straight match, were led by Dylan Missry's 12 kills (.429). UCLA improved its records to 14-1 and 3-0 in MPSF play and picked up points in the Crosstown Cup competition. Next up is a trip to play at No. 1-ranked Long Beach State (12-0) on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
In set one, UCLA pulled off a 6-1 run to establish a 9-4 lead. USC closed to 9-7 and then the Bruins used kills by JT Hatch and Christian Hessenauer to take a 15-10 lead. After kills by Hessenauer and Ma'a, the lead grew to 19-12. Oliver Martin won a joust for a 23-13 edge and a Martin kill finished off the Trojans at 25-15. UCLA hit .591 for the set with Hessenauer totaling five kills. Martin (three kills) and Daenan Gyimah added three blocks each.
USC grabbed the early lead in set two at 5-9. Missry led the Bruin charge back with three kills in a run which ended with the score even at 11-all. The score was then tied at points 12, 15, 16 and 17. UCLA tallied the next four points on a service error, a Missry/Gyimah block, a hitting error and a Missry/Gyimah/Hessenauer block. Two more Trojan errors ended the set at 25-18. Gyimah, with four, and Hessenauer, with three, led a strong Bruin block. USC had 10 hitting errors in the set.
The Trojans moved out to a 5-7 lead in set three. UCLA tied it at 7-all after an ace from Hatch. The score was then even at points 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15. A couple of Martin kills lifted UCLA's margin to 17-15. The Trojans closed to 19-18, but Hatch answered with a kill and then a Missry ace made it 21-18. UCLA ended the match after back-to-back aces from Gyimah at 25-19.
Hessenauer (.412), who added five blocks, joined Missry in double-digit kills with 11. Hatch and Gyimah, with two each, led UCLA to a 6-1 edge in service aces. Gyimah also finished with five blocks as UCLA won the net battle 9.0 to 7.5. USC, at .141, became the eighth opponent to hit under .200 this season. Micah Ma'a recorded 39 set assists and four digs as the Bruins hit .458 for the match. Martin registered six kills while hitting .500. Garland Peed added three digs and 23 serve receptions without an error.
