LAST TIME AGAINST OREGON
Kris Wilkes totaled 21 points and Thomas Welsh added 17 as the Bruins dropped a 94-91 decision at Oregon on Jan. 20. UCLA trailed the Ducks 81-69 with six minutes to play before using a furious rally to cut the Bruins' deficit to 88-87 with 1:09 remaining. UCLA was unable to tie the game (or take the lead) in the final minute.
ย
THURSDAY'S WIN
Aaron Holiday had a season-high 10 assists (and team-leading 17 points), while Thomas Welsh logged a career-high 17 rebounds (and 15 points) in UCLA's 75-68 win over Oregon State on Thursday. The Bruins earned their fifth win in their last six games. Prince Ali (11 points) and Kris Wilkes (10 points) rounded out the Bruins' list of double figure scorers. UCLA shot 39.3 percent, the team's lowest overall field goal percentage in any victory this season. The Bruins won the rebounding battle by a 51-33 margin and had 18 offensive rebounds against Oregon State.
ย
CAREER HIGH FOR WELSH
Thomas Welsh recorded a career-high 17 rebounds in the win over Oregon State, marking the sixth game in his career in which he has grabbed at least 15 rebounds. Previously, Welsh had 16 rebounds in games against USC (2/18/2017), California (2/25/2016) and Arizona State (1/9/2016).
ย
HOLIDAY'S HEROICS
Aaron Holiday is tied for fourth place in scoring in the Pac-12 (19.0 ppg), through Thursday, Feb. 15. He has totaled at least 20 points in 13 games. He entered his junior season having scored at least 20 points in just three previous games (all as a sophomore in 2016-17). Holiday currently ranks No. 37 on UCLA's all-time scoring list with 1,267 points. He ranks No. 8 this season in the Pac-12 (all games) in three-point field goal percentage (41.7%, 58-of-139) and is No. 10 in free throw percentage (83.4%, 131-of-157). Holiday also ranks second in the Pac-12 in assists per game (5.7).
ย
Through games played Sunday, Feb. 11, Holiday was one of six players in NCAA Division I men's basketball to have averaged at least 19.0 points and 5.0 assists per game. Others in that group included Trae Young (Oklahoma), RJ Cole (Howard), Junior Robinson (Mount St. Mary's), Jon Elmore (Marshall) and Jermaine Marrow (Hampton).
ย
Holiday (33 points and 11 rebounds against Washington State on Dec. 29) became UCLA's first player to record at least 33 points and 11 rebounds in a game since Feb. 26, 1995. Ed O'Bannon had team highs of 37 points and 13 rebounds in UCLA's 100-77 win over Duke in Pauley Pavilion, connecting on 14 of 22 shots.
ย
NEWS AND NOTES
UCLA has just four games remaining on its regular-season schedule โ€“ one home games (vs. Oregon on Saturday) and three consecutive road contests to be played at Utah (Feb. 22), at Colorado (Feb. 25) and at USC (March 3).
ย
Senior Thomas Welsh is the only player in school history to have tallied at least 900 career rebounds and made at least 30 career three-pointers (the three-point arc first was established in the college game prior to the 1986-87 season).
ย
Welsh has made 31 of 82 three-point attempts as a senior. Prior to this season, he had attempted just one three-pointer (and he made that three-point shot) in a win over Washington State at home on March 4, 2017.
ย
Freshman Jaylen Hands helped give UCLA a 44-34 halftime lead in the win at Arizona last Thursday by hitting three three-pointers with under one minute to go in the first half. Hands finished with 11 points in that game (all in the first half).
ย
Through 14 Pac-12 contests, Aaron Holiday has shot 86.2 percent at the free throw line, converting 81 of 94 free throw attempts. Holiday has made (81) and attempted (94) more free throws than any other Pac-12 player (league games only).
ย
DOUBLE-DOUBLES
Thomas Welsh (13.0 ppg, 10.6 rpg) has totaled 15 double-doubles this season. He recorded 10 double-doubles as a sophomore in 2015-16. Welsh is the eighth UCLA player in the past 20 years to have logged at least 10 double-doubles in one season. Since the start of the Bruins' 1998-99 campaign, Kevin Love has registered more double-doubles in a single season than any other UCLA player (23 double-doubles in 2007-08). The school's single-season double-doubles record is 28 by Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) during the Bruins' 1967-68 NCAA title-winning season.
ย
THIS AND THAT
Aaron Holiday ranks first among all Pac-12 players (in conference games only) in scoring, having averaged 20.3 points in the Bruins' 14 league games (through games played Feb. 15). In addition, Holiday has made 37 of 73 three-point attempts in Pac-12 action, converting at a 50.7% clip (the No. 1 three-point percentage among all Pac-12 players).
ย
The Bruins have shot 50.0% or better in nine games (going 8-1 in those contests). UCLA shot a season-best 58.2% in the team's 107-84 win at California (Jan. 6). Last week, the Bruins shot 51.6% (32-for-62) in a road win on Thursday, Feb. 8, at then-No. 13 Arizona. UCLA ranked third in the Pac-12 (conference games only) in 3-point percentage (38.4%, 129-of-336).
ย
Aaron Holiday and Thomas Welsh both reached the heralded 1,000-career-point milestone in a Pac-12 victory against Washington State earlier this season (Dec. 29, 2017). In a 33-point, 11-rebound performance, Holiday crossed the 1,000 point marker in the first half of the game. Welsh reached the milestone in the second half of UCLA's victory that night.
ย
Senior center Thomas Welsh and Arizona's Deandre Ayton are the only players in the Pac-12 to have averaged at least 10 points and 10 rebounds per game (Welsh currently stands at 13.0 ppg and 10.6 rpg). Welsh (11 pts, 12 rebs) and Ayton (16 pts, 12 rebs) each had double-doubles when UCLA won at No. 13 Arizona, 82-74, on Thursday, Feb. 8.
