#4 Bruins Post Run-Rule Win Over UCSB

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Bruins scored in all five innings on Saturday in their opening game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I, recording a 9-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara at Big League Dreams Sports Park.
UCLA (7-0) posted 11 hits, as redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia had three and drove in two, while senior Kylee Perez and freshmen Briana Perez and Kinsley Washington all notched two-hit contests.
In the circle, freshman Holly Azevedo improved to 4-0 on the season, striking out three in five innings and giving up just one run and four hits. She struck out a pair in the first and retired 14 of the last 15 batters she faced, posting 1-2-3 innings in the second, third and fifth.
The Bruins trailed for the first time this season after the Gauchos (5-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Alyssa Diaz.
UCLA responded with multiple runs in each of the first three innings. In the bottom of the first, Briana Perez led off with a bunt single in front of the plate and scored on a triple to left by redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan. Following a walk to junior Brianna Tautalafua, Garcia singled off the UCSB third baseman's glove to plate Jordan and give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
In the second, Washington roped a one-out triple to left and scored on a Briana Perez single to left-center to make it 3-1. Kylee Perez followed with an infield single, both her and Washington moved up a base on a wild pitch and Jordan drew a free pass to load the bases. Tautalafua grounded a ball to short for a force out, but Briana Perez scored to up the edge to 4-1. Garcia then singled to left to bring in Jordan to increase the lead to 5-1.
The Bruins added two more in the third on a two-out rally. Washington singled to left and moved up a base on a UCSB error. Another error with Briana Perez up allowed Washington to score, as the ball went all the way to the wall and Perez ended up at third. Kylee Perez then scored her sister on a single to right to make it 7-1.
In the fourth, Garcia led off with a single up the middle and was pinch-run for by junior Jenna Crawford, who moved to second after a walk to Nickles and scored on another Gaucho error with Washington at the plate.
The Bruins capped off the scoring in the fifth with another two-out run. Kylee Perez walked to open the inning, and one out later, stole second. Following a walk to redshirt senior Jelly Felix, Nickles one batter later singled to left-center to plate Perez and give the Bruins their fourth run-rule win of the season.
The Bruins play twice on Sunday, taking on Syracuse at 5 p.m. and UAB at 7:30 p.m. Live audio and stats will be available for both games at UCLABruins.com.
