CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -ย The fourth-ranked Bruins scored 14 runs, allowed none and improved to 9-0 on the season, posting a doubleheader sweep of Syracuse (6-0) and UAB (8-0 in five innings) on Sunday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I at Big League Dreams.
In game one versus the Orange (4-3), redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia took a perfect game into the seventh inning for the second start in a row. She settled for a one-hitter, striking out 10 in a complete-game effort. After recording two strikeouts each in the second, third and sixth, and one apiece in the first, fourth and fifth, Garcia allowed a leadoff single to Sammy Fernandez in the seventh to end the perfect game. Garcia added another strikeout to end the game to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Offensively, the Bruins had five hits, as sophomore Bubba Nickles and redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan each recorded two, with Jordan and junior Paige Halstead both driving in a pair.
UCLA did all its damage in two innings, scoring four in the second and two in the fifth. In the second, Nickles launched a leadoff homer to left, her second of the season. Walks to Halstead and freshmen Julie Rodriguez and Kinsley Washington loaded the bases for freshman Briana Perez, who grounded out to second to bring in Halstead to make it 2-0. One out later, Jordan singled to left to plate Rodriguez and Washington to extend the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth, the Bruins had junior Imani Johnson at second and Nickles at first when Halstead doubled to right field to score both to make it 6-0.
Versus the Blazers (2-7), it was senior Johanna Grauer's turn to pitch a one-hit shutout, striking out six in five innings and giving up three walks. She had a strikeout in every inning and two in the fourth, retiring the side in order in the third and fourth frames.
The Bruins had 11 hits, with Jordan going 3-for-3 with two RBI, junior Taylor Pack adding two hits and two RBI and junior Zoe Shaw producing two hits.ย
UCLA scored in every inning against UAB, starting with a run in the first after Perez led off by reaching on an error, scoring on a one-out double to left-center by Jordan. In the second, Nickles led off with a walk, moved to second on a Pack grounder and scored when Shaw reached on an infield single, with an overthrow by UAB allowing Nickles to score.
The Bruins busted it open with four in the third. Senior Kylee Perez led off with a walk and scored on a triple to right off the bat of Jordan to make it 3-0. Two outs later, Nickles singled to bring in Jordan with the fourth run and Pack followed with a two-run homer to left-center to increase the margin to 6-0.
UCLA added two more in the fourth. Kylee Perez singled up the middle with one out, and was pinch-run for by junior Imani Johnson, who moved to third on a double to left-center by Jordan and scored on a passed ball. With sophomore Jacqui Prober running for Jordan, she scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0.
The Bruins play twice more at the MNCCIย on Monday, facing Grand Canyon at 11:30 a.m. and Team Japan at 2 p.m. Live scoring and audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
