SIX GAMES IN FIVE DAYS FOR FOURTH-RANKED UCLA
The fourth-ranked Bruins will play six times in five days in a wraparound holiday weekend, as UCLA starts things off with a 6 p.m. contest on Thursday against Fordham. The Bruins then go to Cathedral City for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I, playing UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (8 p.m.), Syracuse (5 p.m.) and UAB (7:30 p.m.) on Sunday and Grand Canyon (11:30 a.m.) and Team Japan (2 p.m.) on Presidents' Day Monday. The Bruins go back to Cathedral City next weekend for Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic II, playing #22 Nebraska (5:30 p.m.) and Liberty (8 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 23, #7 LSU (5 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 24 and Missouri (9 a.m.) and Fresno State (11:30 a.m.) on Sunday, Feb. 25.
BRUINS IN THE POLLS
The Bruins' position in this week's polls remained the same, as UCLA is fourth in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, gaining eight points, and fifth in the USA Today/NFCA rankings, gaining 12 points. UCLA is one of seven Pac-12 teams ranked in the Top 25 of both polls: Oregon (#3 NFCA/#3 USA Softball), Washington (#4 NFCA/#5 USA Softball), Arizona (#11 USA Softball/#12 NFCA), Arizona State (#16 USA Softball/#18 NFCA), Utah (#21 NFCA/#24 USA Softball) and California (#22 USA Softball/#23 NFCA), with Oregon St. also receiving votes in both polls. In the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches poll, UCLA was second, earning 55 points and a pair of first-place votes.
Briana Perez NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF WEEK
Briana Perez had an outstanding opening weekend to her collegiate career and was bestowed with Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week accolades, as announced on Tuesday.
Perez had hits in all five Bruin victories last weekend, including multiple hits in four of five. She went 11-for-18 (.611) with two home runs, 11 runs batted in, nine runs scored, two doubles, two stolen bases and a triple.
The freshman had hits in her first two at-bats, adding a stretch of six consecutive plate appearances with a hit later in the week. She posted two hits, two runs and three RBI against Maryland on Feb. 9, including a three-run homer, adding three hits, three RBI and two runs versus Middle Tennessee later that night. On Feb. 10, Perez produced three hits, three runs and three RBI against Cal Poly, notching a pair of doubles as part of an eight-run first inning. To cap off the weekend on Feb. 11, Perez had two hits in another win over Cal Poly and a two-run homer in the weekend finale versus UC Riverside.
Perez's Freshman of the Week award is the seventh in UCLA history in just the fourth year of the award's existence.
NEWS AND NOTES
Head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez is nine wins away from 500 for her career ... the Bruins had 13 comeback victories last season, but never trailed in any game last weekend ... UCLA was 35-0 last season when leading after five innings and has won 64 in a row when ahead after five (twice last weekend) ... Kylee Perez enters her senior year with a .389 batting average, which is sixth in UCLA history. The All-West Region and All-Pac-12 Conference First Team selection from a year ago, who was seventh in the nation in hits with 86 in 2017, has seen her average increase exactly 20 points every season (.368 in 2015, .388 in 2016, .408 in 2017) ... senior Johanna Grauer is tied for third in Bruin annals in saves (7), while senior Selina Ta'amilo is tied for 10th (4). Ta'amilo is also tied for 10th in career appearances (104) ... senior Madeline Jelenicki is tied for second at UCLA in sacrifice flies (13).
