Garcia Throws a Gem in Win Over Fordham

LOS ANGELES - Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia was masterful in the circle on Thursday night against Fordham, setting a career high with 17 strikeouts and retiring 21 of the 22 batters she faced, including the first 20 in a row in a 4-0 victory over the Rams at Easton Stadium.
Garcia, who improved to 2-0 on the season, struck out the side in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings, two apiece in the first and seventh and one in the fifth. The lone hit came with two outs in the top of the seventh on an infield pop fly that landed just outside of the circle.
After 2 1/2 scoreless innings, the Bruins (6-0) jumped on the board in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. Freshman Kinsley Washington reached on an error to open the inning, moved to second on a bunt single by freshman Briana Perez, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by senior Kylee Perez to make it 1-0. With the Perez sisters on second and third, redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center to plate Briana with the Bruins' second run.
In the fourth, junior Taylor Pack stroked a one-out double into right-center, moved to third on a ground out by junior Zoe Shaw and scored on a Washington single to center to make it 3-0.
The Bruins increased the lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Sophomore Bubba Nickles tripled to right with one out and scored on a dropped fly ball in right with Pack up.
UCLA heads to Cathedral City this weekend for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic I. The tournament runs from Saturday to Monday, with the Bruins' first game being on Saturday at 8 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara.
