No. 13 UCLA Sweeps Portland with 15-3 Victory

LOS ANGELES – Michael Toglia went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run and added four RBIs, while Chase Strumpf drove in five runs with two doubles as the No. 13 UCLA baseball team earned a series sweep of Portland on Sunday with a 15-3 victory.
Zach Pettway earned the win in his first career start throwing 5.0 innings allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Portland's Eli Morse suffered the loss allowing seven runs on nine hits in two innings.
For the third-straight game the Bruins scored a run in the first inning as Daniel Amaral led off the game with a single, moved to second base on a balk and came around to score on a Jake Hirabayashi single up the middle. UCLA added five runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead highlighted by back-to-back RBI-singles by Kyle Cuellar and Strumpf.
Portland scored its first run of the game in the fourth inning on a Cody Hawken solo home run, but the Bruins responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a two-run home run by Toglia and a RBI-double by Strumpf.
The Bruins once again put up three runs in the fifth inning to make the score 13-1 as Toglia hit a RBI-double to bring home Amaral followed by Strumpf hitting his second double of the game to plate two runs. The Bruins struck once again in the seventh inning for two runs as Toglia hit a RBI-single through the left side followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by Strumpf for a 15-1 advantage.
Nick Scheidler, Chase Farrell, Garrett Barker and Brian Gadsby combined to toss three scoreless innings in relief allowing just three hits with three strikeouts.
UCLA (3-0) ended the game with 15 runs on 17 hits and no errors, while Portland (0-3) finished with three runs on nine hits with one error.
UCLA will continue its seven-game homestand to begin the season on Tuesday when it hosts Pepperdine at 6 p.m. PT for the first midweek game of the season from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
