No. 12 UCLA Walks Off Against Pepperdine, 2-1

February 20, 2018 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Chase Strumpf hit the game-winning RBI-double in the bottom of the ninth inningย to lead the No. 12 UCLA baseball team to a walk-off victory over Pepperdine, 2-1, on Tuesday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Ryan Garcia made his first career start for the Bruins and earned a no-decision after throwing 5.2 scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out seven batters.

Tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, Daniel Amaral led off the inning with a line-drive single to right field and was moved to second base on a Jeremy Ydens sacrifice bunt. After an intentional walk and a strikeout, Strumpf came up and ripped the first pitch of the at-bat over the left fielder's head for the game-winning run.

UCLA scored first with a run in the bottom of the second inning as Amaral hit a RBI-single up the middle to bring home Jake Pries from second base.

Both pitching staffs took over the game from there as neither team scored again until Pepperdine tied the game in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out RBI-double by Jordan Qsar to right-center field.

Brian Gadsby earned his first win of the season tossing 2.2 innings in relief allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Pepperdine's Qsar suffered the loss allowing one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Chandler Cooper started the game for the Wave and went 4.0 innings allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Bruin pitching staff of Garcia, Nick Scheidler, Chase Farrell and Gadsby combined for 11 strikeouts and no walks in the game.

UCLA (4-0) finished with two runs on nine hits with no errors, while Pepperdine (2-3) ended the game with one run on seven hits with no errors.

UCLA will conclude a seven-game homestand to begin the season this weekend when it hosts Baylor for a three-game series starting on Friday at 6 p.m. PT from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
