No. 4 UCLA Splits Two at Barbara Kalbus Invite
February 24, 2018 | Women's Water Polo
IRVINE, Calif. โ The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo split two matches at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Saturday, defeating No. 5 Hawai'i, 9-8, before falling to No. 1 Stanford, 10-3. The Bruins will face another Top-5 team Sunday in No. 2 California. The third-place game will start from the Anteater Aquatics Complex at 11:30 a.m.
In the morning game, Lexi Liebowitz struck in the first minute to get the Bruins on the board (7:01). Chloe Barr of the Rainbow Wahine answered on a penalty shot even the score at 1-1. Lizette Rozeboom would go on to take advantage of a power play at 1:07, sending the Bruins to the first break with a 2-1 lead.
The teams would continue to alternate goals throughout the second quarter, with the Rainbow Wahine's Maartje Keuning getting things started at 6:38. She would add another to answer Liebowitz's second of the day (5:33) to again knot the score (4:03). Brooke Maxson (3:30) and Maddie Musselman (1:31) would sandwich goals around a Rainbow Wahine power play strike to cap a high-scoring second frame with the Bruins leading, 5-4.
Rozeboom's second gave the Bruins their first two-goal lead of the game (5:15). That would be short lived, though, as Hawai'i cut its deficit back to one just 43 seconds later. Elyse Lemay-Lavoie netted her first of two at 1:46 to send the game to the fourth quarter tied at 6-6.
The Bruins created a small cushion on goals by Bronte Halligan (7:29) and Maxson (5:25) as the game entered the home stretch. Following Lemay-Lavoie's second (3:49), Musselman doubled her total at 3:12. Keuning's third would not be enough, as the Bruins went on to a 9-8 win.
The afternoon tilt saw Stanford jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Grace Reego's goal at 1:19 would pull the Bruins within two to conclude scoring in the first.
Goalkeepers Carlee Kapana and Julia Hermann controlled the first 5:24 of the second quarter before Stanford took over. The Cardinal tallied three more goals over 1:41 as the teams neared halftime to increase its lead to 6-1.
Devin Grab converted at 6:05 to get scoring started in the third. Freshman Myna Simmons also scored her second goal in as many days (3:07), but the Cardinal was able to maintain its lead on goals by Jordan Raney and Aria Fischerโthe second of the game for each. Makenzie Fischer and Sarah Klass tacked on two more in the fourth.
Like UCLA, Cal has suffered its two losses to Stanford and USC. The Bruins won all four of their matchups against the Golden Bears in 2017, with three of the games decided by three goals or fewer.
