Bruins Blank Cougars, Run Pac-12 Streak to Three
March 24, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES -- The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis secured its third Pac-12 win in a row Saturday, as it defeated No. 39 Washington State at Los Angeles Tennis Center, 4-0.
It was a big day for Bruin sophomore Ena Shibahara, who not only teamed with Alaina Miller to clinch the doubles point, but also secured the overall win with a straight-set winner in her ranked singles match on the top court.
The Cougars broke through first in doubles play, as Guzal Yusupova and Tiffany Mylones defeated Abi Altick and Ayan Broomfield on Court 2, 6-3. The No. 15 Bruin team of Jada Hart-Terri Fleming quickly pulled the home team even, though, holding off the Washington State pair of Barbora Michalkova-Melisa Ates, 6-4, to put the pressure squarely on Court 3. The pressure built even more when the Cougar tandem of Michaela Bayerlova-Aneta Miksovska forced a tiebreaker to decide the opening point.
The Bruin team of Shibahara-Miller, already a winner of six straight matches, proved its lucky number was seven Saturday. The red-hot Bruin duo notched seven straight points to earn the decisive seventh game, extend its winning streak to seven and take the doubles point for UCLA.
Miller, who had also won six straight singles matches heading into Saturday's duel with the Cougars, blanked Washington State's Ates on Court 6, 6-0, 6-0, to quickly make it 2-0. The 100th-ranked Bruin has not dropped a set during the streak, which began Feb. 23.
No. 46 Altick, a winner of eight of her first 10 collegiate dual matches, continued her success with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Cougars Michalkova on Court 3. The Bruins won each of the first sets in singles play, making it a matter of when, not if UCLA would secure the conference match.
No. 13 Shibahara would do the deed in the lone ranked match of the afternoon, as the Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. native knocked off No. 43 Bayerlova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Hart, Fleming and Broomfield each held a second-set lead when the match went final.
The Bruins will have a quick turnaround with No. 47 Washington paying a visit to LATC Sunday. Play will begin at noon.
