No. 15 UCLA Sweeps ASU, Wins Sixth Straight
April 13, 2018 | Women's Tennis
With the victory, UCLA improved to 15-4 overall with a 7-1 mark in league play while winning its 16th straight set against a top-50 opponent. The Sun Devils meanwhile dropped to 13-6, 5-3. The Bruins quickly won the doubles point before taking home victories on courts two, four, and five in singles play, enabling UCLA to snap a two-match losing streak to ASU.
"I loved the way we competed today," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "It was important to get out ahead and get the doubles point because we know ASU is a good team. I'm pleased with the way we made adjustments as a team, even when losing the first or second set, and we were able to come back and finish off a good team win."
The Bruins started off on a good foot by taking the doubles point via wins on courts one and three. The 11th-ranked pairing of Jada Hart and Terri Fleming made quick work of ASU's Lauryn John-Baptiste-Ilze Hattingh duo, winning six of seven games to clinch at court one. Ena Shibahara and Alaina Miller finished off the Sun Devils in doubles with a 6-3 victory on court three.
Ayan Broomfield and Gabby Andrews saw their doubles match go unfinished. They were trailing 4-3 when UCLA wrapped up the doubles point.
On court five in singles, Broomfield put UCLA halfway to a victory with a quick 6-2, 6-4 decision. The two-set triumph gave her singles wins on court five for the second straight contest.
In arguably the most dramatic matchup of the day, sophomore Jada Hart gutted out a three-set win on court two to put UCLA on the precipice of victory despite falling 6-1 in the first. The Colton, Calif. native recovered to dominate in the second en route to a 6-0 win, then won the final three games of the third set to claim the 6-4 triumph, finishing the match with an overhead smash past Hattingh.
Terri Fleming on court three and Abi Altick on court four raced to score the clinching win, and it was ultimately Altick who secured the contest-ending 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory, which gave the freshman her 10th win out of her last 11 decisions.
Singles matchups on courts one, three, and six went unfinished.
UCLA looks to make it eight straight conference wins on Saturday afternoon, hosting unranked Arizona at 12:00 p.m. PST.
