UCLA Wins Seven Events at Rafer Johnson/JJK Invite

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Freshman thrower Alyssa Wilson recorded her first career triple and the UCLA track and field teamsย took home seven event wins as part of Saturday's Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at Drake Stadium.

Wilson, a Jackson, N.J. native, started off her day with a decisive victory in the hammer, tossing a collegiate-best 60.71m (199-2) on her fifth attempt, out-throwing second-place finisher Carissa Van Beek of Texas A&M by over 14 feet.

Wilson picked up her second win of the day in the shot put. She took the victory on her first throw, an outdoor-best toss of 16.31m (53-6.25). Senior Ashlie Blake was the runner-up at 15.63m (51-3.5). In the men's competition, junior Kai Wong finished third overall with a mark of 15.65m (51-4.25). Competing unattached, redshirt freshman Jacob Wilson won the event with a mark of 17.89m (58-8.5).

Wilson completed the triple in the discus competition, winning the competition on a clutch final attempt. In the sixth round, she took over first place with a launch of 52.36m (171-9) and the mark held for the event win.

Junior thrower Justin Stafford got UCLA on the board in the very first event of the day, winning the hammer throw with a mark of 61.99m (203-4). The launch gave Stafford three event wins in his four hammer outings this season.

Idrees Bernard (15.6m, 50-25) and CJ Alumbres (15.42m, 50.725) finished 1-3 and each set personal bests in the men's triple jump to give UCLA its fifth event victory of the day. On the women's side, Efe Agege had a 12.00m (39-4) mark which was good for sixth.

Sophomore Marian Spannowsky improved his PR and jumped up to eighth in UCLA history with a 70.54m (231-5) javelin throw. The launch gave the Bruins their sixth and final field event win of the day. At 48.17m (158-0), freshman Illaria Casarotto finished third in the javelin, establishing a new collegiate-best and setting the fourth-best mark in school history in the event.

Tyler Janes came from behind to take a big lead in the final lap to take first place in the men's 3000m with a time of 8:24.30. The penultimate event of the day, it gave UCLA its first track win of the meet. Jessica Cushing Murray was the runner-up in the women's 3000m, while Kennedy Mayer came in fifth with a time of 10:32.08.

The women's pole vault saw junior Greta Wagner take home a fourth-place finish, clearing 3.85m (12-7.5). Junior Melissa Maneatis tied for fifth overall, finishing with a clearance of 3.70m (12-1.5). Senior Reed Scale represented the Bruins in the men's competition, clearing 4.90m (16-0.75) for third place.

Freshman Matthew DeRoos finished sixth overall in the men's long jump, posting a mark of 7.09m (23-3.25). Redshirt sophomore Isaiah Holmes competed unattached, taking third overall with a jump of 7.40m (24-3.5). In the women's field, junior Dominique Beltrez finished 12th, clearing 4.88m (16-0.25). ย 

Junior Taylor Taite finished third overall for the Bruins in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, crossing the line with a time of 11:25.33. The men's competition saw redshirt freshman Chris Morzenti take fourth place with a time of 9:24.74. Senior Scott Snow was fifth at 9:57.59.

Freshman Christina Rice led the way for the Bruins in the women's 1,500m, finishing in fifth place with a time of 4:32.83. Redshirt freshman Kelly Bernd followed in sixth, crossing the line at 4:34.75. Sophomore Cassandra Durgy (4:34.87) and junior Jackie Garner (4:36.45) finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Redshirt freshman Lilly Schmidt took 13th with a time of 4:46.77, while freshman Jacquelyn Hill finished 14th at 4:59.27. On the men's side, George Gleason posted a mark of 3:45.92 to lead all Bruins and take fourth place. Other finishers included Millen Trujillo (14th, 3:56.00) and Andy Ehrenberg (19th, 4:00.72).

The Bruins took second place among collegiate teams in the women's 400m relay, crossing with a time of 44.56.

UCLA had three of the top seven finishers in the women's 100m hurdles, led by Patriana Perry's time of 14.05 in heat one which was good for third place overall. Kendall Gustafson finished sixth at 14.34, while Dominque Beltrez was next after her with a time of 14.49.

In the 400m dash, senior Joe Herrera recorded a runner-up finish with a time of 47.41, the best time in that event by a Bruin in the 2018 outdoor season. Ratanya Washington notched a time of 58.46 on the women's side, placing her sixth among collegiate participants.

Four Bruins finished in sequence with sub-12.00 times in the 100m dash, led by Jessie Maduka at 11.88. She was followed closely by Suzie Acolatse (11.96), Ashley Lewis (11.98), and Jelvon Butler (11.99). Darius Smith, the lone Bruin competing in the men's 100m, had a fourth-place finish at 10.91, a split second behind second-place finisher Clinton Spellman of Sac State.

Sophomore Riley Kelly set a new PR in the men's 800m for UCLA, running a 1:49.41 time for a third-place finish.

A trio of Bruins landed in the top-10 for the women's 200m dash. Butler (24.01, fifth) was the top UCLA finisher, followed by Ashley Lewis (24.42, seventh) and Gustafson (25.25, ninth). On the men's side, Herrera notched his second runner-up finish with a time of 21.73. His time missed a new PR and first place in the event by less than a tenth of a second. Smith finished fifth in the 200m at 22.41.

UCLA will compete in a pair of road meets next week, traveling for the Sac State Relays in Torrance, Calif. and the John Jacobs Invitational, hosted by Oklahoma, in Norman, Okla. The Bruins will next host a home meet on Apr. 29 against USC.
