LOS ANGELESย - Senior Madeline Jelenickiย belted a walk-off, solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as the third-ranked Bruins claimed another Pac-12 Conference series with a 3-2 victory over #1 Washington on Saturday at Easton Stadium.ย
The Bruins improved to 39-3 overall and 14-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies fell to 41-4 and 12-4 in league.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia got the win in relief to move to 15-1 on the year, striking out six in 4 1/3 shutout innings and giving up only one hit and one walk. She struck out at least one in every frame, including two in the seventh. Freshman Holly Azevedo started and fanned three in 2 2/3 innings, giving up two runs and six hits, striking out one in all three of her frames.ย
The Bruins had six hits as a team, with senior Kylee Perez recording two.
Washington jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its first at-bat on a two-out, two-run double by Kelly Burdick. But it would be the only scoring of the game for the Huskies, who left 10 on base and at least one in every inning.
In the fourth, the Bruins evened things up on one swing of the bat. With one out, Perez singled up the middle and came home on the team-leading ninth home run of the season by redshirtย freshman Aaliyah Jordan, with the ball hitting the top of a tree behind the right-field fence to make it 2-all.
The Bruins were one out away from playing their first extra-inning game of the season until Jelenickiย sent everyone home, hitting a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left to give UCLA its fifth Pac-12 series victory in a row. It was the senior's second homer of the season.
UCLA looks for the series sweep on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
