April 21, 2018 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The No. 14 UCLA women's tennis team sent its seniors off in style and closed the regular season with a nine-match winning streak after toppling crosstown rival USC 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center in a Pac-12 Networks-televised contest.ย
The sweep gave the Bruins an 18-4 overall record at the end of the regular season with a 9-1 mark in Pac-12 play. The Bruins will be the No. 2 seed in next week's Pac-12 Championships, held in Ojai, Calif.
The Women of Troy, who entered the week ranked No. 47, saw their record fall to 12-9, 5-5 at season's end.
UCLA made quick work of the Trojans in double play, taking wins on courts one and two to clinch the doubles point for the fifth straight match and 16th time in the last 17 tilts.
The 52nd-ranked duo of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield were especially in a groove for doubles, dropping just one game en route to a 6-1 win. Seventh-ranked Terri Fleming/Jada Hart followed suit with a 6-4 win on court one to secure the pair's fourth straight victory in doubles.

The Bruins were even better in singles play, with five of six Bruins taking the first set against their Trojan opponents. Only one USC player, Becca Weismann on court three, was able to pull off a first set victory, and that required a tiebreaker.
By the time that tiebreaker concluded, both Broomfield on court five and No. 55 Abi Altick on court four were ready to finish off their counterparts.
Broomfield was the first to accomplish the deed, scoring a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Madison Westby for her 10th singles win of the campaign.

"Getting the doubles points was really huge for us because the girls were able to relax and play really well in singles" said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "It's great to see our players finish off the regular season with a win against USC, feel good, and hopefully carry that on to the conference championships and NCAAs."
Before the contest, five Bruin seniors โ Terri Fleming, Kristin Wiley, Kelly Shaffer, Eliza Day, and McKenzie Purcifull โ were saluted by their coaches, teammates, families, and assembled fans at LATC.
Official seeding and scheduling for the Pac-12 Championships will be unveiled by the league office on Monday. For more information on the tournament, visit the Pac-12ย Championships Hub.
