No. 20 UCLA Rallies Late but Falls to No. 2 Stanford, 13-11

LOS ANGELES โ Michael Toglia hit two home runs and registered six RBIs, while Chase Strumpf drove in four runs and hit a home run as the No. 20 UCLA baseball team fell to No. 2 Stanford, 13-11, after its ninth-inning comeback fell short on Saturday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Stadium. The series is tied one game apiece after the Bruins won the opener on Friday, 8-4.
UCLA trailed 13-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning before scoring five runs to make it a two-run game. Pinch hitter Kyle Cuellar and Jeremy Ydens led off the inning with back-to-back singles and two batters later Strumpf ripped a three-run home run to left field to make the score 13-9. Jack Stronach then singled to set up Toglia for a two-run home run to right-center field to make it a two-run deficit. The Cardinal would then bring in Jack Little to record the final two outs of the game to even the series.
Stanford jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning as Kyle Stowers hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Tim Tawa hit a solo home run in the second inning.
UCLA cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom half of the second inning when Toglia hit his first home run of the game over the left-center field wall with no one on base. It marks the second time this season that Toglia has hit two home runs in a game from both sides of the plate.
Stanford tacked on four more runs in the top of the third highlighted by a two-run home run by Andrew Daschbach to make the score 8-1. After the Cardinal got one more run in the fourth inning, the Bruins responded as Toglia hit a two-run double down the left-field line to plate Strumpf and Kevin Kendall for a score of 9-3.
Stanford would plate four runs in the fifth inning but once again the Bruins responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Strumpf started the scoring with a single to right field to bring home Will McInerny. After a Cardinal error brought home a run, Jake Pries plated Strumpf with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Stanford's Austin Weiermiller (5-1) picked up the win tossing one inning in relief and allowing one unearned run, while starter Kris Bubic allowed five runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of work. Little earned his 10th save of the season.
Zach Pettway (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season allowing eight runs, five earned, in 2.1 innings surrendering six hits and recording three strikeouts. Kyle Mora tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
UCLA (18-8, 7-4) scored 11 runs on 13 hits with three errors, while Stanford (23-4, 6-2) finished the game with 13 runs on 14 hits with two errors.
The series finale between UCLA and Stanford will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
