Garcia Hurls a Gem in Regional Opener

LOS ANGELES - Redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia was masterful in the circle on Friday, striking out 14 in a one-hit, complete-game shutout, as the third-seeded Bruins blanked Sacramento State 3-0 in the NCAA Regional opener at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 51-4 and will advance to a winner's bracket game on Saturday against Cal State Fullerton, which defeated Texas State 2-1 in Friday's first contest. UCLA and Fullerton will square off at 2 p.m. on ESPN3. Sacramento State (31-19) will play Texas State in an elimination contest at 4:30 p.m.
The only baserunners allowed by Garcia (22-2) were a pair of fifth-inning walks and a one-out, seventh-inning double by Sydney Rasmussen, the first and only hit of the game for the Hornets.
Garcia retired the first 12 batters of the game, also setting down the side in order in the sixth. She struck out the side in the third, two apiece in the first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh and one in the fourth. At the plate, the Bruins had six hits from five different players, as senior Kylee Perez recorded a pair of hits.
The only runs the Bruins needed came in the fifth. With one out, junior Taylor Pack drew a pinch-hit walk, moved to second on an infield single by freshman Kinsley Washington and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Kylee Perez. With Washington and Kylee both advancing a base on the throw home, both scored on a single to center off the bat of freshman Briana Perez to make it 3-0, which would prove to be the final score.
