OKLAHOMA CITY - The 300th hit of senior Kylee Perez's career was a magical one, as it went over the fence for a three-run, go-ahead homer to highlight a six-run sixth inning, as the third-seeded Bruins came back to post a 7-4 victory over No. 6 Florida State on Thursday at Hall of Fame Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 57-5 overall and will take on No. 2-seed Florida in a winner's bracket game on Friday at 8:30 p.m. CT/6:30 p.m. PT. The game will be televised on ESPN.
UCLA had 10 hits, with the Perez sisters producing half of them, as Kylee had three and freshman Briana recorded two. In the circle, redshirt sophomore Rachel Garcia moved to 28-3 on the season, striking out 15 in seven innings, giving up four runs, four hits and six walks. She struck out four in the sixth inning, three in the second and fifth and two in the first, while adding 1-2-3 frames in the first and fourth.
The game was scoreless through four innings, with Florida State (52-12) not recording a hit during that stretch. But the Seminoles would jump on the Bruins with four in the top of the fifth, scoring the game's first run on their first hit, an RBI single by Dani Morgan. Florida State added three more runs in the fifth on a bases-clearing double by Sydney Sherrill.
The Bruins got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Taylor Pack reached on an error to open the inning, moved to second on a single up the middle by freshman Kinsley Washington, and one out later, came home on a single to left-center by Briana Perez to make it 4-1. The hit by Briana extended her hitting streak to 20 games, the fourth-longest streak in school history.
In the sixth, UCLA rallied, scoring five of its six runs with two outs. With one out and senior Madeline Jelenicki at first following a fielder's choice, junior Brianna Tautalafua singled to put a pair on base, with junior Stevie Wisz coming in to run for Jelenicki and sophomore Jenna Crawford running for Tautalafua. A single to left by Pack loaded the bases, which was followed by a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center by freshman Julie Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Then Kylee Perez came through with some heroics, belting a 1-1 pitch out to right for her seventh homer of the season to put the Bruins ahead 5-4. Briana Perez followed with a bunt single and would score on a triple to right by redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan to make it 6-4. With sophomore Jacqui Prober in to run for Jordan, Garcia reached on a Florida State error to bring in Prober with the Bruins' seventh run.
