AUSTIN โ UCLA right-handed pitcher Jake Bird has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Third Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
Bird becomes the fifth UCLA player to earn Academic All-America honors and just the first since Mike Magnante in 1988. He earned Academic All-District 8 team honors earlier this year along with teammate Daniel Rosica.
Bird, a senior from Stevenson Ranch, Calif., is a two-time Academic All-Pac-12 second team selection as an economics major with a 3.62 GPA. He was named an All-Pac-12 selection after leading the conference in ERA during the regular season and finished the year with a 7-4 record and a 2.18 ERA. The senior finished the year top-10 in the Pac-12 in innings pitched with 111.2 and earned runs allowed with 27. He was drafted in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday to Colorado.
The 2018 CoSIDA Academic All-America Baseball Teams recognize top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
