July 11, 2018 | Baseball

DURHAM, N.C. - UCLA right-handed pitcher Zach Pettway wad named a first team Freshman All-American by Baseball America on Wednesday.

Earlier this summer, Pettway was named a first team Freshman All-American by D1Baseball and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and also a second team selection by NCBWA and Perfect Game. He was also selected as an All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

Pettway, finished his freshman campaign with an 8-4 record and a 3.35 ERA in 16 appearances, including 15 starts, and was one win shy of tying the program's freshman record for wins. He registered a team-best 78 strikeouts in 96.2 innings and walked just 19 batters all season. He recorded six starts this season without allowing a walk.

Pettway ended the regular season top-10 in the Pac-12 in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. He became the first Bruin freshman since 2012 to start his career 5-0 and also the first UCLA freshman since Adam Plutko in 2011 to start and earn a win on the opening weekend. Pettway tossed 8.0 shutout innings against Baylor in his second career start and set a career-high with 10 strikeouts at Arizona on May 4.

He is the first Bruin to earn first team Freshman All-American honors by Baseball America since Plutko in 2011 and joins Trevor Bauer (2009), Gabe Cohen (2007) and Brandon Crawford (2006) as the only UCLA players since 2006 to earn the distinction.
