Bruins Abound at the International Cup

IRVINE, Calif. - Four Bruins competed at the USA Softball International Cup (July 9-15) at Bill Barber Park, as rising redshirt junior Rachel Garcia and Bruin alum Delaney Spaulding won the gold medal, while rising junior Bubba Nickles and Bruin alum Ally Carda picked up the bronze.
Representing Team USA Red, Garcia appeared in three games in the circle, going 1-0 with a 1.31 earned run average. She struck out 11 in 5 1/3 innings, giving up only one run, five hits and one walk. Garcia opened the tournament for Team USA Red with three hitless innings against Peru (July 9), striking out seven to pick up the victory. She added three strikeouts in two innings in a relief outing on July 14 versus Chinese Taipei and fanned one batter in relief in the gold medal game against Japan on July 15. At the plate, Garcia had one hit in six at-bats, a single against Peru.
Spaulding was second on the team with three home runs and eight runs batted in, tied for second with seven runs scored and third with a .429 batting average, producing six hits in 14 at-bats. She had a hit in five of her six games, leaving the yard on a three-run homer against Scrap Yard Fast Pitch (July 12), another three-run bomb versus Chinese Taipei on July 14 and a solo shot in the gold medal game against Japan on July 15. Spaulding also scored at least one run in five of the six games, including three in the opener versus Peru (July 9) following a single and two walks.
Coming up next for Garcia and Spaulding is a trip to the WBSC Women's World Championship in Chiba, Japan (Aug. 2-12). The event will be the first opportunity for teams to clinch a berth into the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Representing Team USA Blue, Nickles hit .353 with six hits in 17 at-bats. She added three RBI, a double, a triple and three runs scored in seven games. She reached base in both plate appearances in her first game of the tournament against the Czech Republic (July 9) on an RBI double and a triple. Nickles recorded a pair of singles versus Japan (July 14), as well as an RBI single against Canada (July 12). She scored runs in four of her seven games.
Cardaย posted two hits in seven at-bats (.286) in four games, scoring twice and driving in a run. She had an RBI single against Canada (July 12), adding another single in the bronze medal game versus China (July 15), scoring in both contests. Carda also pitched in three games, striking out the side in one inning of relief on July 11 against Colombia.
