No. 8 Softball Tops BYU and Seattle at Judi Garman Classic
February 28, 2026 | Softball
With UCLA's offensive onslaught today, the Bruins have accomplished a new program feat by scoring 10-plus runs in five consecutive games. Senior Megan Grant reached base in 9-of-10 plate appearances with six walks, one hit-by-pitch, and two home runs across the two games.
Including yesterday's 15-12 win over No. 4 Florida, each of UCLA's last three games have exceeded three hours in duration.
Game 1: UCLA 13, BYU 8
UCLA, playing as the designated home team, quickly erased an early 3-0 Cougar (4-14) lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Each of the Bruins' first six hitters reached base via four hits and two walks. Slimp took the second delivery of the game from BYU starter Gianna Mares for a base hit through the 5-6 hole. Grant and Woolery each worked walks to load the bases for Kaniya Bragg who plated UCLA's first two runs of the game on a double to the right field wall.
Bragg's base hit chased Mares out of the game before she could record an out. Bri Alejandre, the first hitter reliever Jada Villegas faced, smacked a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Bruins a 4-3 advantage they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
UCLA ballooned its lead to 12-3 thanks to crooked numbers in the second and fourth innings. Similar to how the Bruins opened the ballgame, their first four hitters in the second all reached on hits. Grant logged her first hit of the game with a towering homer that kept climbing over the right field wall for her 13th blast of the year. Woolery turned her first hit of the game into a triple after BYU's shortstop and center fielder collided on a fly ball. One pitch later, Bragg brought Woolery home with her second RBI hit of the day on a single into left field.
Grant reached base in all five of her plate appearances with a home run and four walks. Grant's four walks are tied for second-most by a Bruin in a single-game; the last time a UCLA student-athlete drew four walks was Colleen Sullivan at Arizona State in 2019.
Grant and Woolery each drew their second walks of the game in the bottom of the fourth to set the stage for Bri Alejandre. The freshman from Alhambra, Calif. homered out to left field for her eighth longball of the season, which ranks third on the team behind the two Bruins she drove in.
Shortstop Aleena Garcia matched Alejandre with a homer of her own to go back-to-back with her teammate on the left side of the infield.
The fourth-inning fun continued for UCLA as the next five Bruin batters drew walks to score two more runs, pushing the lead into run-rule territory at 12-3.
UCLA starting pitcher Sydney Somerndike, who needed just three more outs in the top of the fifth to end the game, gave up singles to the first two batters of the inning. This prompted UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez to go to sophomore Brynne Nally in a relief situation. After striking out the first batter she faced, Nally surrendered a three-run homer that cut the Bruins' lead to six and extended the life of the contest.
Woolery tallied UCLA's final RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth with a high-fly double that landed between the second base bag and BYU's center fielder in a Bermuda Triangle. The Cougars clawed for two more runs in the seventh on three hits to bring the score to its final tally at 13-8.
Somerndike earned her third win of the season (3-0) while allowing five runs off seven hits and two walks in her 4.0-inning outing.
Game 2: UCLA 16, Seattle University 10
UCLA won a see-saw affair in its afternoon contest with Seattle University. Alexis Ramirez's grand slam in the top of the fifth inning put UCLA up 13-10, marking the sixth and final lead change of the game. Megan Grant recorded the Bruins' other homer in the game with her NCAA-leading 14th homer of the year in the top of the seventh.
Offensively, the Bruins totaled 31 baserunners off 10 hits, 12 walks, six hit-by-pitches and three Redhawk fielding errors. UCLA's six hit-by-pitches set a new program record, breaking the previous mark of four which had been accomplished seven times previously. Additionally, the Bruins' 12 walks are tied for fifth-most in team single-game history and are the most drawn by a UCLA team since the 2016 season.
Seattle University was sparked by the offensive performance of pinch hitter Audrey Borup who hit a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the third. Later in the fourth, Borup came through again by driving in the game-tying and go-ahead runs with a two-RBI single through the left side.
Freshman Natalie Cable earned the start in the circle for UCLA and muscled through 4.0 innings to pick up her fourth win of the year (4-1). Cable gave up 10 runs (9 earned) off 10 hits and three walks. Sophomore Brynne Nally (2.0 IP) and senior Taylor Tinsley (1.0 IP) each recorded scoreless innings of relief.
