UCLA to Host Five Home Gymnastics Meets in 2019
September 18, 2018 | Gymnastics
The defending NCAA champion UCLA Gymnastics team will host five home meets in 2019, welcoming 2018 NCAA finalist Nebraska; Pac-12 rivals Arizona State, Arizona and Stanford; and Utah State to Pauley Pavilion. Road opponents include NCAA runner-up Oklahoma and NCAA finalist Utah, and the Bruins will also compete on podium at a quad meet in Anaheim.
UCLA opens its season at home the weekend of Jan. 4-6 against Nebraska, who finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, before competing against Cal, UC Davis and Michigan State at the NCAA Challenge powered by Under Armour on Jan. 12. The NCAA Challenge, held at the Anaheim Arena, will give the Bruins an opportunity to compete on podium ahead of the NCAA Championships.
Pac-12 Conference season begins the weekend of Jan. 18-20 against Arizona State in Pauley Pavilion and continues on the road at Stanford (weekend of Jan. 25-28), Oregon State (weekend of Feb. 1-3) and Washington (weekend of Feb. 8-10). The Bruins host another conference meet on the weekend of Feb. 15-17 against Arizona and will complete the Pac-12 schedule at Utah the weekend of Feb. 22-24.
The Bruins will travel to Oklahoma the weekend of Mar. 1-3 in perhaps the most highly-anticipated contest of the year. Last season at the NCAA Championships, UCLA edged the Sooners by 0.0375 points on Peng-Peng Lee's perfect 10 on beam on the final routine of the night.
UCLA will close the regular season at home on back-to-back weeks, hosting Stanford (weekend of Mar. 8-10) and Utah State (weekend of Mar. 15-17). UCLA's annual alumni meet will take place in the regular season finale against Utah State, which is coached by Amy Smith, team co-captain of UCLA's 1997 NCAA Championship team.
Postseason kicks off on Mar. 23 at the Pac-12 Championships, held at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah. The NCAA Championships in its new format will start with four nine-team regionals hosted by Georgia, Michigan, LSU and Oregon State from Apr. 4-6. The top two teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will take place in Fort Worth, Texas. The semifinals will take place Apr. 19, with the top two teams advancing to the four-team final on Apr. 20.
The full schedule will be announced in the coming weeks, along with television selections.
