Bruins Vault Into Second Place After 36 Holes

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - After struggling to a 4-over 292 in its opening round on Sunday, UCLA rebounded with the best round two in the field, compiling a 6-under 282 in the afternoon, moving into second place after 36 holes at the Windon Memorial at Knollwood Club.

The Bruins were tied for eighth after the first round, 11 strokes back of leader Michigan State. Following Sunday's afternoon round, UCLA is now in second, just seven shots behind the Spartans.

After two rounds, senior Jack Ireland and sophomore Eddy Lai are each inside the Top 10. Ireland is solo ninth at 3-under 141. Ireland shot an even-par 72 in the morning, making five birdies (No. 3, 6, 9, 10 and 12), three bogeys and a double. He was three strokes better in the afternoon (-3, 69), making an eagle on the par-5 10th to go with five birdies (No. 2, 8, 12, 15 and 17), two bogeys and a double.

Lai was five shots better in his second round and is tied for 10th (-1, 143). He posted a 2-over 74 in his first 18 holes, producing three birdies (No. 3, 6 and 16) and five bogeys. Lai notched a 3-under 69 in his second trip around Knollwood, posting four birdies (No. 4, 7, 10 and 14) and one bogey.

Junior Hidetoshi Yoshihara and freshman Sean Maruyama are both tied for 22nd (+1, 145) after 36 holes. Yoshihara shot a 1-over 73 in round one, making three birdies (No. 3, 7 and 16) and four bogeys. He recorded an even-par 72 in round two, balancing his books with four birdies on No. 2, 5, 13 and 16 and four bogeys. Maruyama, playing as an individual, opened with a 3-under 69 in the morning, making five birdies (No. 1, 2, 6, 8 and 14) and two bogeys. In the afternoon, he shot a 4-over 76, posting three birdies (No. 10, 15 and 16), five bogeys and a double.

Senior Cole Madey and sophomore Devon Bling are each tied for 27th (+2, 146). Madey recorded a 2-over 74 in round one, with three birdies (No. 6, 8 and 16) and five bogeys. He was two strokes better in the afternoon, shooting an even-par 72 on three birdies (No. 5, 10 and 15) and three bogeys. Bling notched back-to-back, 1-over 73s. He made four birdies on No. 5, 6, 13 and 16 and five bogeys in the morning and three birdies (No. 5, 12 and 15) and four bogeys in the afternoon. Junior Harrison Mahon, playing as an individual, is tied for 55th (+7, 80). He opened with a 1-under 71, making three birdies (No. 18, 6 and 11) and two bogeys, while shooting an 8-over 80 in the afternoon (one birdie on No. 5, six bogeys and a triple). Senior Patrick Murphy, also playing as an individual, shot an opening 78 (+6), recording an eagle on the par-5 6th, two birdies, five bogeys, a double and a triple. He shot a 4-over 76 in the afternoon on one birdie on the sixth and five bogeys.

The Bruins' final round will start at 7:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. CT off the first tee in the order of Bling, Madey, Yoshihara, Lai and Ireland, with Maruyama (7:48/9:48), Mahon (7:57/9:57) and Murphy (8:06/10:06) going off the 10th tee.
