UCLA Dominates Cal in 4-0 Shutout Victory
September 30, 2018 | Women's Soccer
BERKELEY, CALIF. - No. 16 UCLA scored a season-best four goals in a dominant 4-0 shutout road victory over California.
Senior Anika Rodriguez scored two goals, and sophomore Viviana Villacorta contributed a goal and an assist. The Bruins (6-3-1, 1-2-0 in the Pac-12) hammered Cal (4-6-1, 0-3-0) with a season-high-tying 21 shots in the game, including a 15-1 shot advantage at halftime.
Junior defender Sunny Dunphy put UCLA ahead 1-0 in the 18th minute with her first goal of the season. Sophomore Ashley Sanchez created the goal, sending a perfect cross into the box, and a crashing Dunphy tapped it in past Cal goalkeeper Amanda Zodikoff. Rodriguez doubled the lead in the 31st minute, taking a Chloe Castaneda pass and firing a long-distance shot that bounced past Zodikoff into the back of the net.
Villacorta increased UCLA's lead to 3-0 in the 66th minute with a beauty of a goal, going top shelf to the far post from 20 yards out. Rodriguez closed the scoring with her second goal of the game in the 74th minute, another long-distance shot that went off Zodikoff's hands and in. Villacorta recorded the assist on the play.
Bruin goalkeepers Lauren Brzykcy and Teagan Micah recorded their second shared shutout of the year. Micah made three saves in the second half. Zodikoff made a career-best eight saves for Cal, all in the first half.
