NORMAN, OKLA. - UCLA ran into a voracious Oklahoma defense that recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss in a 49-21 Sooner win at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The Bruin defense allowed just 179 yards rushing themselves, but the Sooners took advantage of nearly 200 return yards that gave them favorable field position.
UCLA running back Bolu Olorunfunmi rushed for two touchdowns, tight end Caleb Wilson had four catches for 92 yards, and freshman quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 254 yards and a touchdown for the Bruins. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray threw three touchdowns and rushed for two more while throwing for 306 yards and rushing for 62. Bruin safety Adarius Pickett led all players with 12 tackles.
The Bruins (0-2) struck first, using a big 65-yard reception from Wilson to set up an Olorunfunmi three-yard rushing touchdown that gave UCLA a 7-0 lead.
The No. 6/5 Sooners (2-0) answered right back thanks to an 86-yard kickoff return by Tre Brown that started the Sooner drive at the 12. Three plays later, Rodney Anderson ran it in for a three-yard touchdown to tie.
After the Sooner defense forced a three-and-out, Murray hit Marquise Brown for a 58-yard touchdown pass on third and 14, giving Oklahoma the lead, 14-7, with 3:17 to play in the first. Murray increased Oklahoma's lead to 21-7 at the start of the second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run.
The Bruins gained some momentum at the end of the second quarter when Osa Odighizuwa stopped Trey Sermon for a two-yard loss on fourth and one at the UCLA 23, allowing UCLA to go into halftime down by just 14. But Oklahoma ran off 21-straight points in the second half to take a 42-7 lead before the Bruins got back on the board with an Olorunfunmi two-yard touchdown run with 11:11 to play in the game. Thompson-Robinson added a nine-yard touchdown pass to Michael Ezeike late in the fourth, the first collegiate touchdown for each freshman.
UCLA will return home to face Fresno State on Sept. 15 at 7:30pm in the Rose Bowl.
