Bruins Earn Another Shutout, Top Maryland 1-0 on the Road

September 08, 2018 | Men's Soccer

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 14 UCLA continued its early-season defensive dominance on Saturday afternoon, shutting out Maryland for a 1-0 win at Ludwig Field.

The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. local time on Friday night, but had to be postponed until Saturday afternoon due to lightning storms in the area.

The clean sheet was UCLA's (3-1-0) third out of the first four games of the season. This is the first time the Bruins' have accomplished that since the 2013 season. It is also the fewest goals allowed through the first four games of the season (one) in the Jorge Salcedo era (since 2004) and the fewest overall for the program since 2000.

In the second half, junior forward Mohammed Kamara netted the game's lone goal, giving him a team-high four on the season.

"On the road at Maryland demands that you roll up your sleeves and battle, and that is what our guys did today," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "The game-winning goal from Mohammed was fantastic and the pass from Erik Holt was equally as good. We are happy with getting back to posting a shutout and are pleased with the result. This was a great way to end our road trip."

Kamara found the back of the net in the 52nd minute, as Holt, a senior midfielder and the team captain, picked him out with a cross. Kamara got his head on it for his first aerial score of the year (his previous three goals came from on-the-ground shots).

Holt's assist kept him atop the Pac-12 season leaderboard with three for the year. All three of his helpers have come on Kamara goals.

That one score held up as UCLA recorded another sterling defensive performance. The Bruins surrendered just six shots overall on the day, only one of which reached freshman goalkeeper Justin Garces, who made the save for his first career shutout. Despite needing an equalizer to extend the contest, the Terrapins (0-2-2) mustered just one shot over the final half hour of the contest.

UCLA returns to Wallis Annenberg Stadium for a pair of home contests next week, hosting Omaha on Wednesday and CSUN on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. starts.
