Bruins Fall to Arizona State, 84-73

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's basketball team suffered an 84-73 loss to Arizona State on Thursday night in a Pac-12 contest in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
 
Playing in their first home game since Saturday, Jan. 5, the Bruins (10-9, 3-3) opened the game with an 11-0 lead before Arizona State rallied midway through the first half.
 
Sophomores Kris Wilkes and Jaylen Hands each scored a team-leading 15 points for UCLA.
 
Arizona State's Luguentz Dort had 16 points for the visiting Sun Devils (14-5, 5-2 Pac-12). Remy Martin totaled 15 points and 11 assists, while Zylan Cheatham tallied nine points and a team-high 20 rebounds.
 
UCLA's Cody Riley finished with a team-leading 10 rebounds, matching his season high.
 
Thursday's game included 19 lead changes, as both teams entered halftime with UCLA carrying a 44-43 advantage.
 
ASU came out of the break with a hot hand, shooting 65 percent from the field. The Sun Devils nailed 5 of 8 3-point attempts over the first 10 minutes of the second half to secure a double-digit lead. Arizona State ended the second half shooting 52 percent from the field, limiting UCLA to 32 percent shooting.
 
Arizona State's largest lead of the game came after Dort made a layup, pushing ASU's cushion to 72-60 with 8:23 to play. The Sun Devils' lead never fell to any less than seven points in the game's final 12 minutes.
 
UCLA opened the game with an 11-0 scoring run, highlighted by a slam dunk by Jalen Hill and a deep 3-point basket on the right wing from Hands.
 
The Sun Devils slowly chipped away, securing their first lead of the game with 6:11 to play in the opening half. Romello White had a second-chance layup to put ASU ahead of UCLA, 30-29.
 
UCLA carried a 44-43 cushion into the locker room at halftime after freshman David Singleton buried a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play.
 
The Bruins will be back in action against Arizona (14-6, 5-2 Pac-12) this Saturday evening. Game time in Pauley Pavilion is 7 p.m. The Bruins' game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
