MVB Finishes Tritons in Four

The No. 7 UCLA men's volleyball team took down UC San Diego in four sets in a non-league match played on Friday night in San Diego. Scores of the contest were 20-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23. Brandon Rattray pounded a career-best 21 kills on the night and added three aces in his return to his home area. The Bruins improved their record to 6-2 on the season and will be on the road again next week to play at No. 5 Loyola-Chicago and No. 9 Lewis from the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA).
In set one, UCSD moved out to an early 3-6 advantage. UCLA closed to 9-10 after a kill by Austin Matautia. The Tritons then upped the margin to 10-15 after a Bruin error. With UCSD owning a 13-19 lead, the Bruins battled back to within two at 17-19 behind the serve of Micah Ma'a who scored a couple of aces in the run. A Dylan Missry kill made it 20-22, but a service error was followed by a Triton ace and kill to propel the home team to a 20-25 win. UCLA hit .308 for the set, but the Tritons swung at a .600 clip with no errors in 20 attempts. Each team tallied a couple of aces. Rattray led UCLA with four kills.
The Bruins used three straight kills by Daenan Gyimah to jump to a 5-2 lead. The Bruin margin was 10-7 following a kill by Matautia. Another Ma'a ace made it 13-8 and an ace from Rattray lifted the Bruins into an 18-11 advantage. A Rattray kill put the Bruins up 21-15. Rattray and Gyimah teamed up on a block to make it set point at 24-17. A kill from Matautia evened the match at a set apiece.
A strong service game start from Gyimah, with two aces, helped push the Bruins into an 8-2 lead. UCSD closed to 10-8, but UCLA answered for a 15-9 edge after a Matautia kill. UCLA led 18-13 on a Grant Maleski swing. Three kills and an ace down the stretch from Rattray handed the Bruins the set at 25-15.
Neither team could break away in a hard-fought fourth set which featured 17 ties and six lead changes. The score was even at points 7 through 11 before UCSD opened an 11-13 gap after an ace. UCLA came back to draw even at 16 on a kill from Rattray. After the Tritons went up 19-21, the Bruins battled even at 21-all with kills from Maleski and Missry. A couple more Rattray swings put UCLA in front 24-23 and Matautia's Bruin career-best 11th kill ended the match at 25-23.
